It has been two days since Synchronica announced yet another mobile email deal in Latin America. Now Nokia and America Movil have announced a partnership to launch mobile e-mail and multimedia services in the same market.
America Movil is a wireless service provider in Latin America, and will be the first operator in the region to use Nokia Messaging solutions. The company has gone into partnership with Nokia because it believes mobile email will be a strong growth area in the coming years – and it believes Nokia Messaging will keep it ahead of the competition.
Nokia Messaging is a pretty comprehensive email solution. It allows access to up to 10 email accounts, and new mails are automatically pushed to the application. The service will be launched in in five countries this summer, for a selection of Nokia devices.
This mobile email deal is very much just the beginning of the America Movil / Nokia partnership. The two companies were already working together on location-based services, and it looks likely they’ll collaborate further on messaging music, GPS and cameras.

From the report:
Blanca Juti, Nokia vice president for the America Movil Account, said: “We are delighted to make this announcement with America Movil. This collaboration is a good example of how Nokia is extending its vision of ‘Connecting People’. Together with America Movil, Nokia Messaging will deliver on the promise of mobile messaging for everyone in the region.”
What we think?
I initially thought of this in terms of competition between Synchronica and Nokia… but their target markets are so far apart that they might never cross paths. Synchronica is an SMS based mobile email service, targeted at lower end phones. Nokia, on the other hand, has made it clear that it is aiming for the growing smartphone market in Latin America. There’s probably room for both companies, but this certainly highlights the popularity of mobile email and messaging in the region.
