Nokia Mobile Search aka self-evangelising machine
Rating: Oh Dear….
As a mobile search analyst there is one thing that I hate more than poor user interfaces… and its bullshit.
I got quite excited when the Nokia Mobile Search press release landed in my inbox this morning, but the excitement was short-lived. Nokia has announced some so called improvements to its Mobile Search Application. Basically the search service can now search for content stored on a mobile device from SMS to email.
Local search functionality is included to find local services and special media roaming as well so the search knows where the user is – if they travel.
It all sounded too good to be true and quite frankly, it was too good to be true. I tested and download the services on two devices: The Nokia N73 and the Nokia 6880.
I used the SMS and PC download and send to phone service, all of which functioned OK but what I got wasn’t this super duper mobile search. What I got was the Nokia icon saved in my browser, zero access to local search functionality and a basic Windows Live or Yahoo! images search offer.
Disappointed? Too right. Nokia has been positioning its mobile search as the cream of the crop – but this doesn’t deliver.
We’ll give it another go, to be fair, at 3GSM in Barcelona next week as well as again in Germany this weekend and in London the week after next. Full analysis of the mobile search will be available in next month’s Mobile Search Analyst.
