I said Nuance wants to take over the world and I was right! The company boasts one million voice mobile transactions and aims to be THE desktop search service by the end of the decade.

Nuance
From the press release:
Usage analysis of the most recent mobile transactions with Nuance VoiceControl reveals that voice dialing and calendar access accounted for approximately 65 percent of the speech requests, while 17 percent of the requests involved mobile messaging, such as sending SMS messages or email. Nearly all of the remaining requests involved mobile search of yellow pages directories, news and other information. Perhaps most significantly, Nuance reports that usage frequency of the service nearly doubled over the last nine months, with an average of approximately 30 requests per unique subscriber in the month of December 2006, compared to 17 voice requests per user for the month of April 2006.

What do we think?
The US market is ideal for the uptake of mobile voice services. With many people driving or sitting in the car using voice navigation is simple and easy. The car is also quieter and means that the speech-services are not confused with background noise – leaving a pleasant user experience. You can type an SMS when you drive – or you shouldn’t but you can speak.

Nuance has set its goal high. Personally, I am not a fan of voice search, but in car driving search using voice or sending SMS via voice does have a business case.
