ODP specialist, Action Engine, updates its SDP

by: admin Thursday, April 24th, 2008

On-device portal (ODP) specialist, Action Engine, has released the latest version of its SDK [Software Development Kit]. The company argues that version 5.0 makes it easy to develop applications for a wide range of mobile phones. The list of supported devices currently includes Java, Qualcomm’s BREW, Windows Mobile and RIM Blackberry devices.

So there’s no support for Symbian. However, Action Engine argues that unlike rival ODP offerings, its own product doesn’t require knowledge of a proprietary programming language.

So if developers are already familiar with Microsoft’s .Net and/or XHTML, they should have no trouble developing using the Action Engine SDK. Another claimed advantage is that with this offering developers don’t need to build multiple applications or recompile code for each type of device supported. Consequently this speeds up the testing process, too.

Action Engine says it offers APIs and XML tags that help developers integrate their application with native handset features like the dialler; native SMS messaging; contacts; and calendar.

All without the need to learn device-specific APIs. The company argues that its product helps developers reach a wide community of mobile phone users.

Action Engine licenses its Mobile Application Platform to media companies and mobile operators who want to create mobile applications and on-device portals.
