smartphone landscape changing rapidly - maitre

Orange has launched a new smartphone which is specifically targeted at consumers across its Middle East and African markets. The new smartphone – the Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 2 aims to repeat the success of its predecessor, the original Pixi. Nearly 250,000 of these handsets were sold in six months as it rapidly became the most popular smartphone in Orange shops in Africa and the Middle East. Presently one out of every five smartphones sold by Orange in the AMEA region is now an Alcatel smartphone. It will retail from $60 with data, voice and SMS offers.

“The smartphone landscape is rapidly changing – with high quality smartphones becoming increasingly affordable and accessible,” said Yves Maitre, executive vp for connected objects and partnerships with Orange.

He added, “At Orange we continue to make the internet more accessible to our customers in Africa and the Middle East by providing the best phones and tablets, on the best networks, with localised content and services at a price that is accessible for even more of our customers.”

With the Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 2, Orange is able to offer its customers a fully featured 3G Android 4.2 (Jellybean) smartphone.

It comes with a 3.5 inch HVGA screen; dual-core 1.0 GHz processor; 512MB of RAM and 2GB of memory.

Crucially the Pixi 2 comes pre-loaded with the top social networks and other popular applications.

Dr George Guo, CEO of TCL Communication Technology, which makes the Pixi 2, commented, “Alcatel Onetouch is proud to be launching the Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 2 with Orange, bringing the benefits of mobile internet available to even more consumers around the world.”
