Everyone says that in the US you can patent your mothers knitting, and I for one am starting to believe it.
Why?
A company called HipCricket has announced a new measurable solution which allows retailers and quick-service restaurants (QSR) to measurably increase customer loyalty and sales.
Well?
Actually, measuring coupons sounds like a great idea.
But?
Adding the patent-pending thing means that this is ANOTHER PROPRIETARY solution.
And?
Mobile Coupons are in the very, very early days… we don’t need proprietary
BUT…
HipCricket says that its software requires no new software and fits into existing mobile loyalty programs as well as delivering an ability to measure success.
AND?
There is something about “keyword” to a short code. Now, I know about six other mobile search and barcode companies that are trying to patent that very idea….
OH!
If its so easy and so interoperable – patent-pending might just be a PR term to get more traction and interest in the service. In that case, I am gullible and it is an interesting potential service.

Measuring the success of Mobile Coupons via measurable redemption rates is indeed important. Our technology actually ties the unique mobile coupon code to a unique mobile phone number and handset; we launched this new solution about 3 weeks ago. Bena,
The patents have actually been granted in the UK and the patents in the US are 2 months off from being granted. The technology is owned by Eagle Eye Solutions and has been around since 2003. They own the mobile coupon, they are just keeping quiet. Zavers, Cellfire,Yowza etc. watch out … I helped on the project. HipCricket is their partner…. The published patent is important as when you read it you will see 99% of current mobile coupons apps are infringing. armine@eagleeyesolutions.co.uk is the fella here in the US Steve Rothwell is the owner in the UK.
