Pink Champagne with Sarik Weber Cellity

by: Bena Roberts Sunday, July 13th, 2008

So you will not believe my surprise…  I thought Cellity was a tiny start-up based in Hamburg working out of a living room.
Yikes.

Cellity has a lovely office in the heart of Hamburg a tiny very dark garage that I had huge trouble parking my Chelsea tractor in – but managed with help from Sarik.

Anyway – after a tour of the offices and meeting all 5 founders (yes 5)  I ended up eating a 3 course meal in Cafe Atlas and drinking pink champagne.

Sarik is a really relaxed guy with a history of start-ups. He has a few companies behind one in online search optimisation and the other the German equivalent to LinkedIn – Xing.

In fact as I am now (or GoMo News is a German company) – I am starting to realise Xing’s importance. Just after my trip to Hamburg I reconnected with an old friend from Munich and received like ten new invites!

So back to Cellity.

I asked Sarik Weber (Founder and CMO)  is Cellity a Wifi company?
He laughed and screamed NO. The company started off in voice and now has moved to applications. Basically it has a call reconnect solution for cheap call providers or MVNOs. The user makes a call and then gets a call back via a re-direct to connect the call for a lot cheaper. It’s sort of a competitor to Versatel.

That is the meat of the business –but moving forward it wasn’t enough for venture backed Cellity. Instead, a new suite of applications for voice and data are being introduced.  The same VC that backs Skype backs Cellity and it sometimes pays to have your competitors closer as Cellity has its own cheap calls strategy.

In fact we briefly discussed if voice was dead –but we quickly agreed that voice would never die – but data growth will soon increase to extreme levels.

But now with the application and data focus Cellity is more of a competitor to Trutap.

I got the first ever sexy demo of the best on device twitter application I have ever seen – it was hot to trot.  I mean, I think it’s the first of its kind as I haven’t seen it before for twitter. But before I rave too -  much after the demo Sarik promised me a trial and then I will write a full review.

Back to the lunch – Sarik and I discussed it all. I have to say, Cellity has great ambitions. It is a company on a mission and German start-ups are hot. I am going to set up a feature section on the German market.
