Rating: roll over

By Annie Turner

HP has been trying to make an electronic pad that you can ‘turn pages on’ and is as easy to read as paper for years. The results so far are not impressive, so I wasn’t expecting to be too impressed by Polymer Vision’s rollable display. How wrong can you be? The 5in screen is just like reading on paper; that is, clear and not much affected by bright light, unlike the back-lit screens usually used on mobile devices. I read a bit of my favourite Sherlock Holmes short story, A Scandal in Bohemia, on it. Bliss.

When the screen is not in use, it simply rolls around the very light (prototype) device. Forget watching TV on mobile, this will be the making of e-books.

Telecom Italia and Polymer Vision are to manufacture a rollable display device for the mobile market in 2007. I might have to move to Italy.
