Prawn AND steak? What a country this is! Dinner with Mocospace in Boston

by: Cian Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Great dinner hosted by Mocospace last night in Fleming’s. It’s true what they say about Boston seafood. I’ll be dreaming about those huge, tasty prawns…

Eighteen people got together, from every sector in the mobile internet. Social networkers, advertisers, content providers, you name it. Got to have a long talk with Jim Gregoire, VP of Marketing for Mocospace and Matt Kojalo, Director of Business Development. Topics ranged from wild childhoods in Southy to sniper tactics during Irelands 1916 rising. But, obviously, the main topic of discussion was where the mobile industry was going.

The phrase I heard time and time again was “I know we say this every year, but next year is the one to watch.” Every year, it is hoped that next year will be the breakout year. Some people even feel that 2008 was the closest thing to a breakout year for the mobile industry we’re going to get. But the overwhelming feeling is that everyone is holding their breaths to see the Q1 results for 2009. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the air, but there’s also a lot of hope.

I came into this job from the newspaper industry, which has been slowly choking to death over the last two decades. It’s really nice to be involved in a space where people have a real incentive to go out and achieve. Despite all the uncertainty, everyone feels it’s all still there to play for in the mobile internet industry!

So, thanks to Mocospace for a great dinner and an even better conversation. Hope I can return the favour next time you guys come to Europe!
