Probably the most eco-friendly Android phone – the ADzero

Rating: Casing is from organically grown bamboo

A design student at London’s Middlesex University, Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, has designed probably what is the world’s first true eco-friendly mobile phone. That’s because the ADzero’s casing is made from four year old organically grown bamboo specially treated for durability. Woodhouse designed the phone in his spare time. After posting his creations in online forums, he was contacted by a technology entrepreneur. The device was originally intended for the Chinese market, but after a showing at the London Design Week 2011, his company ‘A.D.’ plan decided to launch the phone in the UK first this year [2012]. The company will target the UK’s ‘design aware’ retailers and boutiques. The unique handset is made from as many materials from sustainable sources as possible. GoMo News wonders whether its battery will be sourced from a supplier who doesn’t use conflict (war zone) materials?

Kieron-Scott commented, “Bamboo may seem like a strange material to use for a phone, but it’s actually extremely strong and very durable – perfect qualities for this kind of application.”

Anyway, the really good news for Android fans is that while it is described as half the weight of an Apple iPhone – it will boast a larger screen and will run on the Android OS. Presumably Gingerbread (v 3.0).

The ADzero also appears to boast a piece of unique technology in the form of a ‘ring flash’.

This is a circular photographic flash around the camera’s lens which ensures very even illumination and minimises shadows.

Kieron-Scott’s company – ‘A.D’ – had been set up alongside Middlesex University’s operational director, Jerry Lao, and hardware engineer.

There’s no hint as to which OEM will actually be tasking will actually be manufacturing the handset.

With no announced release date, Kieron-Scott merely commented, “I can’t wait to see my mobile phone in shops this year.”

GoMo News is prepared to ager it won’t take the ADzero as long to appear as Nokia’s first W7 mango phone, the Lumia 800.
