Mobile comics are in
Rating: uclick it baby
I am a huge fan of comics – no I lied. I hate comics and the joy of reading comics for me ended after I stopped fancying Dennis the Menace. But comics seem to be making a come back – but not on paper on mobile.
This article points to US company uClick. The company boasts 55,000 readers (per month) on its mobile comic network.
Also (in general) in the US Verizon charges USD 4.49 and AT&T or Sprint charge USD 3.99 for viewing mobile comics (approximately 12 comics) and there is an additional subscription for manga.
Hmm. Is it me or does this seem expensive? Do you really want to read a comic online? Only I remember that film with Bruce Willis the one about the crazy man with the comic shop and Bruce Willis was never sick (can’t think of name) but the whole point of that was comic as art?
Surely the crowd that likes mobile comics is the wannabe rather than the die hard reader. If you think I’m wrong -let me know!

The film was called ‘Unbreakable’ and I don’t see what it has to do with the story. :/
The comics on the uClick site all appear to be the sort of syndicated comics you are likely to find in newspapers.
If they were specially adapted versions of Marvel, DC and Image comics or even Mangas then I would be interested, I used to collect comics and still read Manga as well as some Trade Paper Backs as I only get the chance to go to the comic shop every so often.
My schedule won’t allow me to get the monthlies anymore to for me and people like me a service that delivers them to me on my phone would be great.
Also there are plenty of great free comics online, another reason the uClick thing doesn’t appeal.

Oh, and the price isn’t really expensive if you don’t mind the format. It’s for a bunch of comics.

me thinks, yes!
“unbreakable” thanks for thata by the way! I love Bruce Willis but prefer Die Hard - so no excuse to blog about his films!
Interesting point about adapting print comics for mobile: it’s quite a time-consuming process and at ROK Comics (www.rokcomics.com) we’re still experimenting with different ways of doing this.
Newer material, such as our adaptation of Dark Mists from Markosia, is easier because the company provides layered files. This isn’t a luxury afforded by adapting classic material like Robin Hood, Jeff Hawke and Garth, so some minor changes have to be made: duplicating panels and splitting word balloons to allow for larger point size for easier reading on a mobile phone, for example.
I think you will see the big companies adapting their material but only once they see proof of concept and clear income streams to justify the editorial costs required.
We’re confident there is a huge market for mobile comics and ROK has invested heavily in making its mobile comics service as accessible as possible to readers, offering barganin subscriber deals for a larger number of comics for example. We also have a number of partner sites specific to key telecom companies in a number of countries, which offer additional revenue streams for both publisher — and individual creators, who are also able to create comics for mobile using our service.
Comment made on September 18th, 2007 at 9:36 amAdorkableChris -> It seems another company beat uClick to a Marvel license. Apparently, Campfire A/S (a Danish company) is now first with Marvel comics on the cell phone… It’s called CATOOZ (check out http://spiderman.getcatooz.com/default.aspx?lang=en-US). I just visited the website and the graphics are pretty promising. Also, they offer household names like Spidey, Fab4, X-Men, Hulk, and Iron Man. Maybe I’ll give this one a go.
Anyone else know more? I’m off to investigate this!
