Singapore’s M1 embraces SMS advertising
Rating: free until you want to know more
Singapore’s M1 has introduced a new SMS platform with advertising and additional content features. News, promotions and personalised information are delivered to the handsets of those who’ve opted in by downloading the necessary app, SMS2.0, by sending SMS2 to 8887. Well, that is for those who have the option as at the moment the service only works on 20 Symbian-powered Nokia models.
For those who can, there is no charge for downloading the app or registration and the resulting SMS cost the same as they ever did. The good thing is that content received on SMS2.0 is free and standard data charges apply only when the customer decides to look at specific items in more detail – let’s hope they make that sufficiently plain or it could unleash a terrible chain of events concluding in something truly appalling like PayForIt.
The service will be available on more Nokia models soon and in December, customers who download SMS2.0 will get one month free surfing, up to 1Mb. The operator said trials have shown that users who are already in interactive mode are more likely to explore onscreen content and advertisements they receive. No shit Sherlock. That’s about as insightful as saying most road accidents happen close to home.
