Quick chat with Tim Haysom CMO OMTP on BONDI

by: Bena Roberts Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

A couple of days ago 3, AT&T, T-Mobile, Telenor, Telefonica, Telecom Italia and Vodafone launched a new initiative. This initiative was driven by the OMTP (all the operators are part of the OMTP) and is called BONDI.

What is it?
Rob wrote about it here – but in short it ensures quick development of mobile applications without compromising security.

I met Tim Haysom CMO of the OMTP a few weeks ago at the Mobile 2.0 Summit in London. We spoke to each other yesterday and I asked him what BONDI meant for the future.

He said, “The key purpose of the Bondi initiative in OMTP is to drive for a consistent and secure web services interface across multiple devices, platforms and operators. If OMTP can be successful in this task, it will provide developers with the ability to provide services which will function across the mass market of devices with browsers”.

Talking about the future, Tim continued, “In combination with the capabilities of the devices both now and into the future, this will allow fantastic new services to be created. The user can also be secure in the knowledge that these web services cannot simply make use of sensitive and personal information about the user. For example, access to location information opens up great new location based services, however without appropriate security, it can be misused”.

I thought this was interesting. I then pressed him on what these new services would be and he said, “OMTP does not seek to predict the new services. It seeks to enable an environment whereby developers can simply and easily produce great new services and users can have trust in those services”.
