Quickie: as Cupcake rolls out, Android gives us a look at Donut

Android 2.0, known as “Donut“, has had a few details released this week. We’ve already had Android update news today, and it’s still too far from Donuts possible August release date to get too excited. So, we’re just going to over the main points real quick.

Android Search: a search service that will look at both mobile Web content and on-phone content. This “univeral” search will have websites sitting next to contact list entries, with the most commonly/recently used items listed higher.

Translate: a text-to-speech update to the Translate app will speak any text in an appropriate accent.

Gestures: a handwriting recognition programme will recognise letters you draw on the touch-screen. It can use those features to jump to entries in the contact list and music librabry.

What we think?

It seems a little premature to start showing off Donut features while Cupcake is still pretty much leaving the starting blocks. And while the above features sound pretty cool, they’re nothing out of the ordinary. Still, Android is a masterful self-publicist, and releasing little tidbits like this will certainly keep us interested.
