The UK’s ROK Entertainment Group has announced what it says is the world’s first video-on-demand (VoD) mobile TV service streamed over 2.5G GPRS. The up-graded VOD mobile TV service is available now on ROK TV. The VoD allows the viewer to fast-forward, pause and rewind content.
ROK TV is available as a subscription service from www.rok.tv and is priced, “for as little as GBP 0.99p per channel per month or for GBR 9.99 per month for all 22 channels with the first two months free”, according to the publicity.
Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman and CEO of Rok, says, “Given that viewers only have the opportunity to watch TV on their mobiles for a few minutes at a time, we believe most people will be reluctant to pay anything more than a token amount to receive full-length broadcast TV on their mobiles.”
We reckons that given the average daily wage in Pakistan (where Rok has just signed up Telenor as a partner, mentioned in the same release) is USD 2.5 for incredibly dangerous jobs like ship-breaking, perhaps Mr Kendrick needs to adjust his ideas of what a token amount and mass market is?
ROK TV offers channels such as Fox News, ITN, National Geographic, Fifth Gear, Popworld, Sports News Television, Xtreme Sports, Reality TV and the made-for-mobile channel, Monkey News Network. This does not include the data charge.
