Scanbuy and Avery Dennison launch mobile barcode solution for in-store retail

Mobile barcodes specialist Scanbuy announced today that it and Avery Dennison Corporation are launching a new in-store service for mobile devices. Avery Dennison is a worldwide creator of identification and decoration tags for products. The new deal will see Avery Dennison connecting it’s line of retail labels with Scanbuy’s suite of Scanlife service.  The service will give users with camera phones much more retail options in store, and could create more revenue for retailers.

The basic idea is to allow retailers to communicate with consumers through the barcodes on products. So when a consumer uses their Scanlife application to read a barcode, they will automatically be connected with any information the retailer wants. Examples include: suggestions for connected products or accessories to purchase; gift ideas; more information on the product; notifications of sales or special offers; and mobile coupons. The service also allows consumers to send this information to friends or family.

Commercial pilots of the service are expected later this year.

From the release:

“By combining technologies, Avery Dennison and Scanbuy will provide consumers with a completely interactive shopping experience that links millions of ticketed apparel items directly to mobile information,” says Jonathan Bulkeley, chief executive officer of Scanbuy. “This new solution will enable brand owners and retailers to stand apart in an increasingly competitive environment and more effectively cross-sell complimentary products and services.”

“Our new mobile-merchandising solution will deliver purchasing suggestions, images, special offers and virtually any type of promotional messaging to shoppers as they are in the process of making buying decisions in the store,” adds Avery Dennison’s Terry Hemmelgarn - group vice president, Retail Information Services. “The information appears on the screen of a consumer’s camera phone, turning the device into a kind of personal sales assistant that provides bottom line benefits to retailers of any size, in virtually every worldwide retail segment and location. These benefits include increased units and dollars per transaction, improved traffic and conversion, and promotion of consumer loyalty. Shoppers can forward the images they capture to obtain a purchase opinion or perhaps just to share the excitement of their shopping experience. Ultimately, our solution taps into the expanding needs of consumers for personalized attention and retailers’ needs to provide on-the-spot sales messaging.”

What we think?

Hmmm… where did I see this recently? An almost identical service was launched not too long ago.

Hah! Found it: StoreXperience launched it’s service at the start of April. Of course, the big difference between StoreXperience and the Scanbuy service is that Avery Dennison are on board with Scanbuy. If you’re trying to create a barcode-related solution for retailers, partnering with one of the worlds largest producers of retail identification tags is a pretty good.
