Codes
Telefonica Moviles
has selected Scanbuy’s mobile barcode technology to enable its 21.5 million subscribers the ability to point a barcodes and then to be directed to the relevant content.

Excuse GoMo News as it just can’t get excited about this. This is a proprietary solution that will benefit Telefonica Moviles customers. Yes – it is a step in the right direction for barcodes and an operator embracing barcodes is a plus. But this is a closed proprietary solution. In true walled garden fashion the press release implies that this is great because all types of barcodes can be read by Scanbuy’s technology. But this is not the main issue.

Will consumers be able to read or scan barcodes that are not created or developed in conjunction with Telefonica Moviles?

Will consumers that purchase a Nokia device with a Scanbuy reader have to install another reader to get access to content from other sources?

Quite frankly this press release raises more questions than it answers and we are going to investigate and then report back.

From the press release:
“Movistar is committed to delivering innovative user experience to its
subscribers and Scanbuy, together with Atos Origin, helps us to fulfill
this,” said Cayetano Lluch Mesquida, Managing Director, Technology and
Services, Telefonica Moviles Espana
. Atos Origin is already a trusted
partner of TME with a strong track record in the mobile telecoms market.”

“Thanks to this new integrated solution from Scanbuy, TME subscribers
will be able to access mobile content and services using the easiest and
latest print-to-mobile technology in the market,” stated Miguel Bravo,
Global Account Director for Atos Origin
. “Atos Origin has a proven record
of over 20 years of accomplishment and experience in the telecoms sector
and has the capacity, skills, and capability to provide global services,”
he concluded.

NeoMedia’s mobile code reading platform qode is making tremendous strides in Europe as well as here in North America. With a great showing at CTIA, tremendous media coverage from the New York Times, and their involvement with the Mobile Codes Consortium, qode is on its way to becoming the code-agnostic universal reader with its soon to be released upgrade version capable of reading UPC, Aztec, Datamatrix, and QR codes.

Best,
Sean
