Scanbuy new 2D Barcode Research

by: Bena Roberts Monday, June 16th, 2008

Oh PLEASE. I like Scanbuy but this research published today is a joke.

Why?

It says

The survey, the first of its kind in the U.S., found that.83 percent of mobile internet users are likely to use Scanbuy’s 2D barcode platform ScanLife

Um.

Last week I was at Mobile Web 2.0 – I was the chairman – I said, “I am the Editor of the leading wireless mobile blog. A blog that cuts the hype reports the truth and is read by 17,000 people”.
The I asked, “who knows and reads GoMo News?”
EVERYONE in the room and I mean even the technicians put their hands up.
This type of research means nada.
But for those who want to read on and to make sure that no one this I am playing favourites:

Additional notable results and trends from the survey include:

82 percent of participants felt ScanLife had a relevance to their needs;
86 percent of respondents said they would tell their friends about this technology;
86 percent confirmed that they would download the ScanLife application to their phone to scan codes that were of interest to them;

82 percent of those surveyed felt ScanLife would make them more likely to use the Internet on their cell phones, highlighting simplified navigation as the primary benefit.

“This survey confirms a developing trend: that a definite market need exists for this technology and the ScanLife application fills this gap for consumers, connecting them to vital information in a matter of seconds,” said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy.  “After deploying ScanLife in a number of international markets, the initial reception from end-users has been extremely positive, and these research results show that 2D barcode technology has huge potential for adoption in the U.S. market as well.”

i don’t follow your logic. Do you know the sample of those being conducted in the survey? Who’s to say they are all industry expert mobile users? Any evidence of this?

Scanbuy conducted an online survey using 1,062 mobile users in the United States who were screened for the following criteria:

* Age 16-54
* Own a cell phone with a camera function
* Have accessed the Internet from their cell phone at least once in their life

A short video was presented to explain how ScanLife works and to demonstrate some potential uses across different industries.

A series of questions were then presented:

* Interest in ScanLife Technology
* Relevance to my needs
* Likelihood to use
* Likelihood to tell friends
* Likelihood to take 2 minutes to download

The red bar graph is a combined total of “Extremely Likely” and “Quite Likely”

Thus the reason the percentages were skewed so high (80%+)

The blue bar graph gives a more accurate portrayal.

This is not factual reporting and laughable at best.

Elin,
my criticism is towards all of these types of surveys not the company.

Good idea. Bad execution.

ScanBuy should have asked a neutral third party to conduct and publish this study.

Unfortunately, results are now suspect and lack creditability.
