Rating: another reason to go to Barcelona

By Annie Turner

I seem to meet Ghatim Kabbara, CEO of Barcelona-based Safira Solutions, everywhere I go, including at last week’s World Telemedia event. There he gave me a sneak preview of what Safira will be launching at the Mobile World Congress (3GSM as was) in Barcelona, next February.

The company specialises in providing software and services with which companies can build a mobile website. Customers include Filmax (which distributes films in Latin America), Virgin Airlines (Nigeria – where Virgin has a huge hub) and Electronic Group Interactive (which offers sports alerts, among many other things).

The as yet unnamed Version 2 of the software will range from being free of charge to a flat montly fee for individuals and small companies who can ramp up what they use as their business grows, plus Safira will be adding a white label service to its portfolio so that its customers can offer it to their customers. Mr Kabbara says, “There’s a huge market for it, from builders to florists.” Safira partners with Bango and Luup to handle orders and payments for its users, who can choose which they want to use.

They look like smart moves. Lots of players are hassling for position in this market (Akmin’s mobiSiteGalore of India springs to mind immediately), so it makes sense for a well-established player to raise their game in the face of growing competition and look to the longer term.
