Rating: what are they thinking?

By Annie Turner

And on the subject of annoying the pants off consumers…

Apparently advertising companies Mobile Posse and Acuity Mobile are working to provide pop-up advertisements to mobile phone users that don’t depend on the use of a mobile browser. In other words, the ads could pop up at any time, not just when the user is surfing the Internet. Oh man, I need to go and lie down with a cold flannel on my brow. It seems the companies plan to keep the irritation level down by exploiting the idle screen and learning what particular consumers react to and what turns them off. Right-oh.

And both companies’ offerings are applications that can be downloaded. Question: why would you? The only way that’s going to work is if one of the big operators provides handsets with the software already loaded.

For me to endure pop-ups, there would have to be a very appealing incentive indeed. Like paying off my mortgage or six months’ holiday. I just don’t see it somehow.
