Rating: the discount card glory?

by Bena Roberts

I got an email from a client asking if I had seen or could confirm the Reuters story about Simyo going to Spain.

1 have read the article but I can’t confirm it. But I thought it was important to clarify that Simyo is a low cost discounting brand and not a pure MVNO.

There is a difference between MVNO – companies that form their own business as a mobile operator provider with their own billing and management system.

A discounter tends to user the backbone of the mobile operator and or at least be part of a multi-brand strategy. Simyo is the discount brand of KPN in the Netherlands and Germany.

But now if the report is right – KPN will be pushing Simyo via the Orange network. If this is the case then it will be more of an MVNO in Spain than a discounter.
