Skyfire, Secures $13 Million in Series B Funding
Rating: Game changing? Term of the day!
They Say: Skyfire, the Mobile Browser that Delivers “The Real Web, Real Fast” Secures $13 Million in Series B Funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Matrix Partners and Trinity Ventures. “We’re thrilled to welcome Lightspeed and get the continued commitment from Matrix and Trinity,” said Nitin Bhandari, CEO of Skyfire.
“With these funds, we are poised to bring Skyfire to a large number of handsets and launch outside the U.S. Skyfire gives users the freedom to browse whatever they want, and now we can extend our efforts to get Skyfire on a significant market share of Smartphones – giving more people what they hunger for” Nitin Bhandari added.
Skyfire is a free downloadable browser which brings the full PC experience to the mobile device with blazing speeds. Fully compatible with YouTube, Facebook and Last.fm and all other Flash and Ajax-heavy web sites.
“Skyfire will fundamentally change the way people use their phones” said Jake Seid, Managing Director of Lightspeed, adding “we at Lightspeed see a truly disruptive product led by proven leaders who understand consumer technology and can navigate the complex mobile ecosystem.”
We say: An interesting day in the development of the mobile web. Two different approaches both claiming a game changing approach. I guess I’m slightly more reserved about Skyfires offering. That’s not to say its demo isn’t impressive - it is. But at the moment its only on Windows mobile devices, one of the least consumer orientated OS’s. Lets see it on a Nokia. Consumer models must be the target for any kind of real mobile web innovation.
Its a pity that its a closed beta and US only as well, otherwise perhaps we could have played with it in the flesh. You can check the impressive demo out here. We will have to wait to see if the experience matches its PR.
