SMX Expo: Ranking Tactics for Mobile Search

by: admin Friday, July 25th, 2008

This session gave a bunch of tips about how to start optimizing your site and pages to be processed through a mobile search engine. A few simple steps can go a long way.

Cindy Krum, from Blue Moon Works, gave a good backgrounder about how mobile search is the most targeted marketing to exist today. This is based on the follow information that can be obtained:

  • Carrier information
  • Phone Model and Browser Info
  • Location at all times
  • Address Book/Calendar
  • Email/Web Browsing tracking info
  • Mobile Web purchases

Cindy went on further to say that the cost of failure and testing is low and that web search on mobile is here, today.

Greg Markel, from Infuse Creative, had some great tips as well.

  • Test on mobile device simulators
  • Have multiple external CSS
  • Look into transcoding for mobile
  • Optimize metadata
  • Look into mobile site maps
  • Optimize for portals/universal results
  • Get rated
  • It’s possible to separate mobile and non-mobile content using robot.txt
  • Follow mobile coding standards
  • Look into tools like the Jumptap tool for mobile keywords

What Do We Think?

We need more education to help the trend for people having good experiences on mobile.
