SpeedBrowsing speeds up off-portal browsing
Rating: where is King Canute when you need him?

LogicaCMG has launched SpeedBrowsing, which apparently does what it says on the tin: it allows network operators to offer subscribers faster access speeds for off-portal web sites, plus the automatic optimisation of all sites for the individual’s handset.
No question that these are admirable and desirable features, BUT while operators still have stupid data tariffs, who cares? That’s stupid as in confusing and self-defeatingly expensive. Most of us are too scared to access the Internet via mobile because we might have to sell our home to pay for it.
Like the British bloke championed by The Daily Telegraph last December who was charged £950 for two hours’ off-portal mobile TV viewing or an acquaintance who ran up a bill for £141 in his lunch hour, streaming video clips from the BBC’s web site to try out his new handset. As he commented, because the clips were streamed, he had nothing to show for his £141 outlay – “and it wasn’t even porn”!
Flat rate data is coming, with T-Mobile’s Web ‘n’ walk (which has not had great take-up due to poor marketing in our opinion) and 3’s X-Series. The rest of them need to take a leaf out of King Canute’s book and recognise that they cannot hold back the tide.
