T-Mobile 33 Million subs in Germany

I have a T-Mobile Germany prepaid card. Why? Because T-Mobile has the best network in Germany. I don’t have a T-Mobile contract – but for the first time this year my husband signed up for a T-Mobile Germany contract. Again, it’s not the cheapest but there are other benefits.

Last night I was in Stuttgart at the beer festival. I got an urgent call and I had to send a file from my laptop. There was only one T-Mobile hotspot available and I didn’t have my credit card. But I knew (having written about it several times that T-Mobile users get hotspot benefits). On a T-Mobile mobile we typed in “Open” to the hotspot short code. In less than 2 seconds we got an SMS with a username and a password for instant “no-mess” access to the hotspot.

Within 3 minutes I was surfing online and the report got sent. Now, that is impressive, fast and simple and only available with “converged” telecom players. Worth paying a bit more for? Yes, I think so. But prices are still getting cheaper from T-Mobile. T-Mobile Germany’s revenue dropped by 2.6% but calling minutes and use increased by 11%.

What is clear is that T-Mobile Germany is doing quite well. There was a gain in the past quarter of fixed customers (up 251,000). The fixed service is losing customers – but isn’t this normal? Do people use fixed lines so much anymore? What is clear is that if T-Mobile does continue to do much better than the rest of DT – it might just become a takeover target.
