T-Mobile court in the middle

Rating: Handbags at dawn

It’s like something outside Ritzy’s nightclub at 2:00am.  Tracey (T-Mobile Germany) has left with gorgeous hunk Darren (iPhone) and is gazing into his eyes thinking about how to maximise the potential of his user interface later that night.  Whilst they are in the coat queue up storms Vicky (Vodafone) who is drunk on red Aftershock and angry because she assumed no man could resist her huge networks and guaranteed roaming. A huge horrible and public fight ensues, both girls end up rolling around in the mud and bouncers eventually tear the girls apart and force them home in separate cabs.

This rather long-winded and pointless metaphor is an attempt to explain what is happening in Germany with the iPhone where a German court has upheld Vodafone’s protestations that T-Mobile is acting illegally by forcing people into a two year contract with the handset.  For the time being people with a spare $1,477 can now buy the phone without a contract, or $590 with a contract.  I think that’s what they call a hollow victory really, only millionaires and footballers can afford that much for a phone. In my opinion Vodafone have made themselves look a little foolish, it’s not selling in the HUGE numbers that people initially predicted, so surely an opco of Voda’s size is big enough and ugly enough to get on with their own offering without being so petty?
