Weekend QR code roundup with FluCamp & MCN
Rating: We were impressed with FluCamp’s graphics
Every weekend GoMobile News carries out arbitrary testing of the 2D/QR barcodes we encounter in real life. Our research is sometimes flawed but at least we bother to investigate how QR codes function in the real world. This time we ran into a campaign from FluCamp which worked well but wasn’t entirely mobile-friendly. We also discovered 2D barcodes buried on the pages of UK bikers’ publication, Motorcycle News (MCN). There codes proved exceedingly difficult to scan in. Continue reading →

Rating: Most mobile campaigns link to video
A survey of the Top 100 US magazines (by circulation) carried out by Nellymoser has found that the use of some kind of 2D barcode is almost universal. The percentage of magazines with at least one such code went from 78 per cent in Q1 2011 to 99 per cent in Q1 2012. Marketers overwhelmingly favoured QR codes over other types of 2D codes with a share of over 80 per cent. Significantly, Microsoft Tag held a 14 per cent share with other types of codes (SpyderLynk SnapTag, Digimarc watermark) having only a 6 per cent market share. GoMobile News is unsure if Microsoft would have such a share globally. Interestingly most codes pointed to a video of some kind. Continue reading →

When two former heads of the MMA take positions as interim CEO’s of competing mobile barcode companies NeoMedia and Scanbuy, it might seem to be a coincidence. A Danish company, ScreenTicket, claims to have landed leading brand, McDonald’s, with its intelligent mobile coupon technology. The company argues that these graphical coupons – which are redeemed over the mobile web – are an easy upgrade for those operating raw text based SMS vouchering systems.
