BCS searches for the Innovative Mobile App of The Year
Rating: Ernest institution wakes up to power of the mobile app
The BCS ( formerly the British Computer Society), which is the Chartered Institute for IT, has begun its search for the most Innovative Mobile App of 2012 as it launches this year’s UK IT Industry Awards, in conjunction with Incisive’s Computing magazine. You’d better huryy, however, because the closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday July 6th [2012]. Judges are looking for mobile apps that run on mobile phones or other devices with built-in 3G or 4G capability. These apps should show an innovative use of the technology in the phones, and possibly of on-line services. They should be publically available – they can be either free or paid-for. Continue reading
Everything Everywhere upsets the whole UK 4G applecart
Rating: Is it 2G? 3G? or 4G? it’s certainly not what 3 has got
This latest fight over 4G in the UK highlights an essential piece of technology which everybody seems to have forgotten. You can be literally anywhere in the world and if you pick up a telephone, you can talk to everybody, everywhere. Now we have Everything Everywhere (formerly Orange/T-Mobile UK) in the UK proving that the exact opposite is true with mobile technology. They are proposing to use spectrum supposedly provided for 2G to offer 4G services. It’s a harsh business climate out that and GoMo News doesn’t blame Everything Everywhere at all for trying to get a commercial advantage over its rivals. It does, however, make something of a mockery of the whole mobile industry when yet another yawning chasm is opened in the quest for a truly global telephone network which would actually work. Continue reading
Curing an iPhone 4 that won’t connect over 3G to Vodafone
Rating: How obscure a bug is this?
Having wasted a great deal of time cursing because we couldn’t get a loan iPhone 4 to connect to the Internet via 3G, it seems a jolly good idea to share the quick fix solution with our readers. Basically, the error message you might receive is that the iPhone 4 tells you that it cannot connect to the Internet because you don’t have a mobile data subscription. In this case, an awfully nice Vodafone help centre engineer talked us through the necessary steps towards the cure in minutes and ended hours of frustration. Continue reading

100 million mobile data users in the Americas using 3GPP
Mobile broadband just keeps getting bigger. 4G Americas has been in the news recently, as it was applauding the specifications that let us know what “4G” actually means (see our report). T-Mobile, your HSPA+ network is not 4G
There are probably going to be a lot of people going over this territory, but I wanted to give a brief run-through for those who don’t want to read through pages of technical specs. T-Mobile USA is making a lot of noise about the growth of it’s 4G network in the United States… but it doesn’t have a 4G network in the States. It’s got an advanced 3G network. Don’t worry, I’ll keep this simple. Continue reading
No FaceTime? Get mobile video calls on 3G from Knocking
FaceTime was one of the sexier reveals from the iPhone 4. Making video calls over your mobile is so very futuristic – it’s the kind of thing we’ve been looking forward to since Bladerunner came out. How disappointing, then, to discover the FaceTime only works over WiFi. And even at that, after some clever chicanery gets it running on 3G, the data consumption is 3MB per minute. Video broadcasting app Knocking claims to have solved both those problems in one release, with the launch of Knocking 2.0 Continue reading
