Nokia should definitely produce a Windows tablet
Why we think it makes sense
The news wires have been burning over the last few days ever since Amazon appears to have mistakenly ‘outed’ the Acer W3-810, a new 8.1-inch tablet which was listed for $379.99. The reason everyone got so excited is that the device seemed to be running the Windows 8 OS. It’s still about twice the price you might expect to pay for a popular Android such as the Google Nexus 7 or the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. However, it’s much closer in price than your typical Windows 9 or RT tablet. If it could competitively price a Microsoft tablet, GoMo News thinks that Nokia might be tempted into the tablet space. Lack of NFC support is hurting W7 Mango
Rating: Even Acer is now pushing Android handsets with NFC support
A smartphone vendor whose name is virtually synonymous with W7 Mango (especially now that HTC is so heavily associated with Android) has announced that starting with its latest handset, all of the forthcoming brand’s Android smartphones will be equipped with NFC technology. The company is Acer and the Android smartphone in question is the Liquid Express. However, this announcement puts heavy pressure for Microsoft to get its act together and introduce support for NFC in Windows Phone (WP7). Its important for Microsoft to rectify this omission because its other key supporter for Mango and onwards is Nokia. The very latest version of Symbian – Belle – supports NFC, so why doesn’t Windows Phone. Continue reading
Debate rages over “too expensive” W7 Mango comments
Rating: Telefónica’s Simon Lee-Smith stirs up hornets’ nest
A Telefónica executive, Simon Lee-Smith, has opened up a can of worms by telling Telecoms.com that he thinks the forthcoming W7 Mango phones “too expensive”. The European general manager for devices with Telefónica also complained that Nokia’s premium devices are “not yet at the right price point.” This has sparked a great debate as to where exactly the fault lies with Nokia wanting €420 for the Lumia 800 and Lee-Smith obviously not happy at paying such a price. Should Lee-Smith’s beef really be with Apple, not Nokia? And can Nokia really charge a premium price for Mango when the Microsoft OS clearly doesn’t merit it at the moment. Continue reading
Microsoft’s Mango is ready – what’s taking you so long?
Rating: Nordic manager berates phone makers
In a Facebook posting, Peter Wissinger, Microsoft’s Nordic manager, bemoans that fact that it is the hardware manufacturers rather than the software company which is the bottleneck with the latest version of WP7 [Mango/Windows Phone 7.5]. He reckons that it is now it is entirely up to manufacturers to launch Windows Phone handsets with Mango because it is ready. So the betting is now on for who will show their Mango phone first. Whilst everyone would love it to be Nokia because Wissinger is based in the Northern region, this is probably a less than subtle hint to the Finnish giant to hurry up. So who is the smart money on? Well, HTC seems to be the hot favourite – thanks to its long association with Microsoft’s Windows based mobile phone OS’s. The dark horse is Fujitsu – with the Toshiba-Fujitsu IS12T which was already slated to appear in September. Continue reading
Microsoft deals another body blow to Nokia
Rating: Expects WP7 handset prices to plummet
Considering Nokia picked Microsoft to provide it with an OS to combat the Apple iPhone, the manufacturer won’t bee too please to learn that its new partner expects prices for WP7 handset to nosedive down to as little as $100 by 2012. Nokia was already in the volume handset business. What it needed was a weapon to beat a competitor which regularly charges $400 for its latest handset. Unfortunately, Andy Lees, president of the Windows Phone division, has told the 15,000 attendees at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angeles that he expects the price of devices to drop. He claimed the price decreases were possible because chipmakers are now able to pack increased functionality onto handset chipsets. Funny that you don’t see Apple passing any such benefits onto its customers in terms of price, then? Continue reading
Intel gives away MeeGo tablet – we can’t buy one
Rating: Apparently there is a MeeGo notebook from Fujitsu
Still smarting from the lack of an Intel announcement re the MeeGo OS, GoMo News has done a little digging. To our surprise, we discovered that there is actually supposed to be a MeeGo powered device available from Fujitsu. It’s the MH330 and there’s even a precise price – $ 380.57. The catch is … just you try to buy one. We searched most of the Asia Pacific where the product really is supposed to be shipping with no joy. So instead we’ve decided to publicise an Intel incentive for app developers which is known as AppUp developer challenge. Continue reading

Don’t like your Android UI? Don’t worry, there’ll be another one in a minute.
Here’s a cool story about a new Android service. HipLogic is launching a service that will allow mobile operators and mobile makers to embed their own UI on Android devices they support – and to update those UIs over-the-air, as well as launch new ones. This story wouldn’t have had as much of an impact on me before today, but I was discussing the new Acer Liquid Android phone with a friend of mine this morning – and this service would be particularly great for that phone.
