Guest Post: Future smartphones probably won’t replace the laptop
by Dr Matthew Candelaria, a professional technology writer from WriterMC.com
The rise of the smartphone for internet usage seemed like the death knell for the laptop. Smartphones are relatively commonplace (Pew and Nielsen agree that still only 50 per cent of North Americans have them) and their usage is growing steadily. However, it is unlikely that smartphones will ever replace the laptop because of their inherent limitations and the rise of alternative technologies. Continue reading
Retailers’ mobile sites could perform badly over Xmas says Keynote
Rating: ‘ Showrooming’ is major concern for bricks & mortar retailers
It has become obvious that 2012 has become the Year of the Mobile Shopper. Consequently, large numbers of Xmas shoppers are expected to use their smartphones for research and purchasing. A crucial activity amongst mobile shoppers is ‘Showrooming’ which is using your smartphone to compare prices and products before purchasing in store. Keynote reckons showrooming has become the’ trend du jour’ in retail – especially for High Street brick & mortar stores. However, Keynote predicts that consumer expectations and actual user experience are going to be wildly different. Continue reading
GoMo watches Formula One on a RAZR smartphone
Rating: BBC’s Media Player saves the day on Android
Over the last weekend [3rd-4th November 2012], GoMobile News struggled to watch the Formula One motor racing live in the UK. But then we discovered that it was possible to play ‘catch up’ by using the BBC’s iPlayer service. The question was – how? And the answer proved to be watching via iPlayer on a Motorola RAZR (XT910). Naturally, the screen size – even on the RAZR – was more than a little bit disappointing. Luckily, the RAZR has a built in HDMI port. So using an extremely low cost HDMI cable purchased from eBay, we were able to plug the RAZR into a regular flat screen TV set. This gave us the screen size we needed but not quite the resolution. We’re working on that bit. Continue reading
GoMo Rant: Why has Adobe dropped support for mobile Flash
Rating: Luckily we discover that RIM’s BB10 can support it
Yesterday [October 10th 2012], GoMobile News was visiting RIM and asked the company’s tech guru to prove that BB10 very definitely supports Adobe’s mobile Flash. If you want a quick and easy test to see if your handset supports Flash correctly, try the GoMobile News litmus test. Visit this site – www.helpmechill.com and you’ll see a sentence at the top which reads … “Click to listen live with.” Click on the option which says ‘Pc player’. If Flash is supported, it will work. If not – and especially if you are a Brit, you are in deep trouble. Continue reading
BBC confirms you can’t watch F1 on a WP7 phone
Rating: No iPlayer support but Android tab bugfix
Those hoping to follow the Formula One motor race today [September 2nd 2012] at Spa Francorchamps on a Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) smartphone are going to be very disappointed. The Beeb (BBC) has told WP Central here in no uncertain terms that it has no plans to develop a version of its iPlayer app for the Microsoft mobile OS for the foreseeable future. What’s more the broadcaster is adamant than there’s a bug in the mobile Internet Explorer app which Microsoft hasn’t fixed despite knowing about it for at least 12 months. Fortunately, GoMobile News has stumbled across a bug fix for those with Android tablets who aren’t be served the iPlayer download correctly. Continue reading
Major hole in Windows Phone 7 still exists
Rating: No Adobe Flash support means no webcams
An enormous gap in the Windows Phone 7 (W7 Mango) OS which we thought had been fixed a long time ago has just caught us out. Unlike our rival publications, GoMobile News actually eats its own cooking. So we were trying to view a live webcam feed on our Nokia Lumia 800 W7 Mango smartphone. After hours of messing around, we discovered that Adobe still hasn’t created a version of Flash for WP7 – even though it was rumoured to be working on such an offering as long ago as 2010. The net effect was that we couldn’t view a webcam feed on our Mangophone despite our best efforts. If WP7 wants to oust Android, then it has got to do a lot better than this. Continue reading
GSMA announces new App Dev Conference for MWC ’12
Rating: Hosted by IMGA, apparently
Now we all know that any mobile app developer worth his or her salt will just have to trot along to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) to be held in Barcelona (sadly) between February 27th and March 1st 2012. So while you are there you might as well attend one of the many ADCs – Application Developer Conferences – which the show is hosting. The line up for these ADCs is still mutating. If you want to know the very latest details why now the site here. Incidentally, you could try viewing the MWC site from a mobile browseer here. Anyway, the GSMA has already signed up RIM/ BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung Bada and WIP (Wireless Industry Partnership) to host ADCs as part of the App Planet section. Now, the GSMA has just announced that it’s signed up IMGA (International Mobile Gaming Awards), too. Continue reading
HTML5 will be a key differentiator in the smartphone OS war
Rating: Latest findings from ABI Research
ABI Research has just published its findings on the state of HTML5 browser penetration in the mobile phone/tablet sector. It has calculated that although there were only 109 million devices with HTML5 browsers last year [2010], by 2016, more than 2.1 billion mobile devices. That’s some leapt. “HTML5 adoption is going to accelerate because it will be a key differentiator in the smartphone OS war,” suggests Mark Beccue, a senior analyst with ABI Research. And Apple (with the iPhone) will not only be the key driver of HTML5 but the primary benefactor as well, Beccue reckons. Continue reading
Why Adobe is losing the mobile development war
Just yesterday, we published an article on how two very different companies were both tackling the same problem in very different ways. The companies were Google and Vdopia, the problem is that Apple iOS doesn’t support Flash, and both of their solutions amounted to the same thing: stop using Flash. Today, yet another company has released a solution that side-steps Adobe. Continue reading
UK’s ITV plays iCatchup with Android app
Rating: Some reviewers already say it’s pants
UK Android fans will have been delighted by the announcement made by ITV’s md for Online and On Demand, Robin Pembrooke, that his company’s first foray into mobile distribution is an Android app. “Android is just the first step in a mobile strategy that will see us rolling out ITV Player across mobiles and tablets, including iPhones and iPads, across the rest of this year [2011],” Pembrooke commented. One in the eye for iPhone fanboys, then. Before you get too excited, however, this app only runs on Android apps supporting Froyo (2.2) and above. Plus half the early reviews say the app is pants. Continue reading
Will Brit Royal wedding crash the mobile networks?
Rating: GoMo News does its bit to help
With any major event – like the Womad music festival, for example – you’re going to have large numbers of people congregated in a small area where there are normally only a few masts. The forthcoming wedding of Britain’s Prince William to Kate Price Middleton, is going to cause mega headaches. Luckily, at least one of the UK’s four major operators – o2 -has been planning ahead for some time. If you want to plan ahead as well, you might want to work out how to stream TV coverage to your handset. Or you might want to download mxData ‘s Tube Map app in time to avoid the congestion on London’s streets. Continue reading

Motorola offers phoneputer with Atrix + HD dock
Rating: CPU or mobile phone – it’s your choice
The news that Orange will soon be offering Motorola’s Atrix handset in the UK caused GoMo News to do a little research. The maker claims that the Atrix is the only model to offer its unique ‘webtop’ application. Plus Motorola is also offering an HD compatible multimedia docking station to go with the handset. If you pop the Atrix into the HD dock, it effectively acts just like a desktop PC’s CPU unit. So, with the Atrix you have the choice of using the device as a powerful Android smartphone or as an HD ready desktop computer. That’s why we decided to nickname it a phoneputer. Continue reading
