Mobile data growth in the West will not be strong enough to avert mobile industry contraction
Severe contraction is possible, with data growth dangerously slow and network costs unhealthily low, says Analysys Mason
Press release
October 1st 2012. Instead of worrying about the impact of a mobile data explosion, mobile operators in the West should worry about ensuring that it happens in the first place, according to a new report from Analysys Mason, which forecasts worldwide mobile data traffic. The report indicates that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of volume of mobile data traffic will be below 50 per cent for the period 2011–2016, and just 40.8 per cent for 2012–2017. The report – ‘Wireless network traffic worldwide: forecasts and analysis 2012–2017‘ – argues that growth in mobile data traffic will not be enough to stop a contraction within the mobile industry in western economies. Data revenue growth is already offset by tariff rebalancing, and together with the loss of core voice and messaging revenue to over-the-top players, and some erosion of operators’ position in device distribution, this contraction could be severe. Rating: Industry reaction to the Jasper Wireless realted announcement
Whoa! There has been massive industry reaction to the seven mobile network operator alliance for M2M which we wrote about previously here. Plus this is not the only alliance over M2M in existence. Significantly, this announcement has also draw attention to the fact that M2M is on the verge of exploding as a potential revenue source for mobile network operators. Continue reading

Core differentiator for BlackBerries is now a commodity says Analysys Mason
Rating: The smartphone’s keyboard isn’t key any more
Speculation is rife following the announcement that BlackBerry’s owner – RIM, has called in bankers to conduct a strategic review. This is what RIM’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, actually said … “After the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged JP Morgan Securities and RBC Capital Markets to assist the company and our board of directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance.” He also stressed that, “We will continue to spend and hire in key areas such as those associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and those tied to the growth of our application developer community.” However, according to Analysys Mason, the problem lies with the fact that smartphone users now care less about having a keyboard and more about being able to play back media content. MACH launches M2M revenue protection solution
Rating: Losses could be large – from €40 billion revenues by 2020
As the M2M (Machine-to-Machine) market grows, so do the number of fraudulent threats posed to M2M service providers’ businesses. Meanwhile, the total number of M2M connections will grow from 62 million in 2010 to 2.1 billion devices in 2020 according to figures produced by Analysys Mason. To counter this danger, MACH has launched an M2M revenue protection solution designed to help M2M service providers reduce losses from fraud and malicious activity on their networks. The new solution forms part of MACH’s broader M Protect revenue protection portfolio (see here). The system will help protect M2M service providers against threats such as SIM cloning; call selling; and Denial of Service attacks. It will also reduce losses caused by human error. Continue reading

The study found that by 2016, only about half of consumers’ usage of mobile handsets will be dedicated to voice or text-based communication. That’s down from two thirds in 2011.
