Mobile apps will conquer the world says Answer
Rating: You bought the game now buy the cook book and watch the film
It seems that the world has genuinely gone mad. As a result of creating what is probably the most successful mobile app ever – the Angry Birds game, its creator, Rovio, is diversifying so widely it is almost unbelievable. For starters, there seem to be a whole raft of Angry Bird films in the making. And who does Rovio hire to create these new films – David Maisel? Like us, you’ve probably never heard of him, but Maisel is responsible for creating a stream of smash hits including Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. And what has Maisel done now? Well, he’s only just joined to Rovio as a special advisor. All of this from just a mobile phone app. Continue reading

From platformers to racing games to RPGs, and more, Mario has sold an insane amount of produce for Nintendo. Smartphone games will go console & vice versa
Rating: we’ll sell 100 million copies of Angry Birds says Rovio
Very interesting remarks made by Ville Heijari, a vp with Finland’s Rovio, makers of the addictive game Angry Birds. Talking to the Sunday Times, Heijari says that his company’s game engage “with people who don’t normally play games at all.” Yet Rovio is planning to do the exact opposite and produce version of Angry Birds which will run on the PS3, Xbox and Wii plus the Mac and PC. All strong games platforms. So the two worlds – dedicated games consoles and smartphones – are already colliding. What’s going to happen next? Console games are going to go smartphone while smartphone games go the other way. Continue reading
MMA fiddles while news wires burn
Rating: Consumer transparency? We’ve heard of it
Talk about attempting to shut the stable door after the horse has bolted. The MMA (Mobile Marketing Association) has suddenly announced an initiative on ‘mobile privacy’ guidelines. Apparently the objective of these guidelines is to address the need for marketers and consumers to have “a transparent, accepted understanding.” This would cover how information collected from consumers is used “for the purposes of relevant value exchange within a mobile marketing context.” So this would have nothing to do with the fact that the Wall Street Journal investigation, then? There’s no money to be made selling Android apps says NY Times
Rating: In-app advertising may be the answer
A recent article in the New York Times (here) confirmed our suspicions that there’s no money to be made just selling apps on the Android Market. It quoted one software developer, James Englert, as saying he rakes in $1 to $2 per day. “That’s pretty good money,” he told the NY Times. One problem is that the Android market is fragmented – unlike the Apple market where you’re basically dealing with just three devices – iPhones, iPods and iPads. The “clunky” payment mechanism within the Android Market is another factor in holding down revenues. Payments for apps from the Android Market are available in only 32 countries whereas with the Apple iTunes App Store that figure is 90. Continue reading
