Mobile advertising and shopping: what is AP doing with smartphones?

Last Friday, the Associated Press Board of Directors voted to test something new on mobile. It will be a mobile advertising service that attempts to replicate the circulars that newspapers slot between the pages of their weekend editions. Can AP’s mobile apps and licensing compete with Internet news?

World Cup mobile application from Associated Press

The Associated Press, the world’s leading source for news and information, is giving mobile users around the globe unprecedented access to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a new application for mobile phones. Local news take heed – AP and Verve are showing how it’s done in mobile

woman_reading_newspaperMaybe one of the biggest success stories in publishing news content on mobile is AP Mobile. The mobile channel of the worldwide Associated Press news network, AP Mobile has over 1,000 local news sources on board. The app has been downloaded by over 2.4 million people, and AP claims that over 55 million mobile stories are read each month. Now the company has decided to make some money from the experience it has gained in mobile. In a partnership with Verve Wireless (another giant of local mobile news), the companies will be selling a “white label” mobile application creation service to make mobilizing easier for local news outlets. Mobile news content from AP gets 30 newspaper boost

Mobile news content – AP is delighted, but what does it mean for local news?

It has now been one year since The Associated Press launched it’s mobile Web and app service, AP Mobile. The company has announced that users have read over 55 million local stories in that time, and more than 1,000 local news sources have signed on to have their content distributed via the mobile service.
