NeoMedia sues SpyderLynx as scanning figures rise

Rating: W7 Mango users bottom of scanning list

As mobile barcode scanning expert, NeoMedia Technologies, announced its performance figures for Q1 2012, the company also let slip that it had started another law suit over its patent portfolio. This time the supplier on the wrong end of NeoMedia’s lawyers is SpyderLynx. That’s interesting because SpyderLynx itself is trying to patent the use of embedding a log into a QR code. See our previous story here. For the lawyers amongst our readership, we decided to publish NeoMedia’s Press release on the who legal action bit here. Meanwhile, NeoMedia is staking its claim to be the leading purveyor of QR code scanning software. It says that 20 million handsets use its NeoReader barcode scanning service worldwide (representing 227 countries). Significantly, Android smartphones account for the majority use of the NeoReader app and 56 per cent of all scans. Continue reading

Scanbuy hooks up with Taco Bell & Viafo @ SXSW 12

Rating: Creates ScanSocial game tied into your Twitter account

It seems that Scanbuy is using the SXSW show in Austin to pump up QR codes by running a competition in conjunction with Taco Bell and Viafo. The competition is called ScanSocial and the aim is to be people scanning codes as much as possible at the show. All you have to do is scan the initial QR code (printed here) and then enter your Twitter login. Viafo’s software ensure this links to your existing Twitter profile (thanks to APIs). The system will then generate your own unique code which you need to get other participants at SXSW to scan to earn points. Continue reading

SnapTags apps for iOS and Android are US only

Rating: Why?

You’d have thought that if you genuinely believe you have a technology that could knock QR codes into a cocked hat, then you might not be just US-centric. Sadly this is the case with SpyderLynk and its SnapTag technology. Its latest announcement concerning Momentum deploying SnapTags for a back-to-school mobile campaign with Office Depot contained this phrase: – “For iPhone and Android users who like scanning, SpyderLynk offers a free app to scan SnapTags.” Unlike other so-called news sites, GoMo News doesn’t just reprint the Press release. No, we took the company at its word and decided to take a look at its Apple and Android apps. After a great deal of searching, we discovered the simple reason why it was near-impossible to download both these apps. They are not available for those outside of the USA. Why? Continue reading

QR code scanners are sub-30, male and quite rich

Rating: The results comScore mining its US data

Understanding which consumer segments scan QR codes; the source and location of these scans; and the resulting information delivered, is crucial for marketers to develop and deploy campaigns that successfully utilise QR codes for brand engagement. Hence, mobile data usage specialist, comScore, has just released the results of a study on mobile QR and bar code scanning based on data mined from its comScore MobiLens service. In essence the study found that the typical QR/1D bar code scanner was male (60.5 per cent of the code scanning audience), young to middle-age that is 18-34 years old (53.4 per cent) and upper income – $100k per annum (36.1 per cent). The survey uses data from the USA and discovered that some 14 million mobile users scanned a QR or bar code on their mobile device in June 2011. This figure represents some 6.2 per cent of the total US mobile audience. Continue reading

Bulmers improves its QR code act, slightly

Rating: Needs to try harder

Following GoMo News‘ criticism of its use of QR codes for its No.17 cider advertising campaign here, we were pleasantly surprised to find another of Bulmer’s QR codes that actually worked. This one was featured in the UK’s Metro free magazine and we noted that the code was resolved by Scanbuy. So itworked this time. The only snag is that Bulmers has fallen foul of our of our Top Tips for including QR codes in your campaigns (see here). The unlearnt lesson is that that a 2D barcode should resolve to something which is mobile friendly. Unfortunately, in this case it didn’t. The code took mobile phone users straight to a full HTML site. Continue reading

PhraseMeme QR scanner app for WP7 discovered

Rating: Nice pointers for WP7 tools revealed, too

If Nokia gets its way then Windows Phone 7 (WP7) will be the next very big thing. It might just happen because Microsoft has a knack of getting there in the end. So it dawned on us that what GoMo News readers might just want is a fully featured QR/barcode reading app for a WP7 smartphone. We’ve found one with the PhraseMeme Scanner. It looks like the developer came across the demand for such an app by accident when it was actually supposed to be creating a game. Reading the company’s Facebook page, this app seems to have proved very popular in the UK. Users from the UK are the second biggest download group for PhraseMeme Scanner as the app has regional support for the United Kingdom (local search for Google/Amazon/eBay). Whilst visiting PhraseMeme’s site we also found loads of pointer for people considering developing for WP7, although it does seem to have a very strong US bias. Continue reading

Will the iPhone 5 contain an NFC chip?

Rating: The odds are that it will

The art of creating a buzz around your product must surely be to get people guessing what the next version will contain even before the latest update is commercially available. Apple is an expert at this game and the fact that blogs are alive with rumours about an iPhone 5 should not come as any surprise to anyone. It’s almost like there’s a Boore’s Law than the level of speculation with double with every new generation of the iPhone. Luckily one of the news sites – CNET – has come up with a round-up of all iPhone rumours to date. View it here.Perhaps the most important question is whether or not the iPhone 5 will contain an NFC chip. If GoMo News was into gambling, we would have to bet on the fact that it will. Useless QR Codes are the best ones I’ve seen yet

I absolutely love to see mobile marketing techniques being used creatively. Inspired by SXSW this year, professional photographer David Freidman has created a series of “useless” QR Codes. The humor surrounding these nuggets of information makes them more effective than any marketing code – they forge a little human connection, create a unique moment, and ask nothing in return.
