Mocana & VeliQ offer mobile app protection for BYOD

Mocana app security automation added to VeliQ’s mPaaS

In a partnership aimed at protecting mobile apps for BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device) installations, Mocana and VeliQ have announced a strategic partnership. They will integrate the Mocana Mobile App Protection (MAP) solution into VeliQ’s mobility Platform as a Service (mPaaS). The objective is to enable enterprise IT managers to secure mobile apps and their data in seconds, without having to write any code. It will be available from VeliQ as the snappily-named ‘Mobi Mobile App Protection by Mocana’, or MAP. The pair claim it will deepen the security offering of the VeliQ cloud-based mobility Platform as a Service (mPaaS) offering. Continue reading

BT hunts new mobile partner in wake of £200m 4G splurge

Former subsidiary O2 could even be in the frame

BT‘s surprise entrance in Britain’s recent 4G auction may have had a hidden agenda, it has emerged, with news that it wants to team up with a mobile partner in a renewed drive into the sector. What’s more it may even join forces with O2, the operator it sold to Spain’s Telefónica 12 years ago. When Ofcom put the super-fast spectrum up for sale earlier this year [2013], BT paid almost £200 million for its chunk of the airwaves, bidding aggressively and ending up with more than it needed to boost just its Wi-fi coverage. UK finally sells off its 4G/LTE spectrum

Rating: Sees BT re-entering mobile space ‘super-Wi-fi hotspot’

The UK comms regulator, Ofcom, has finally announced the results of its 4G spectrum auction. The four existing UK mobile operators have won new spectrum and we have seen a subsidiary of fixed-line incumbent, BT -Niche Spectrum Ventures win spectrum, too. This means that BT has re-entered the cellular market after – in our humble opinion, the disastrous decision to float off its mobile arm – O2. But BT many not be planning to become the UK’s fifth national mobile network operator, according to John Delaney a research director for consumer mobile with IDC. Anyway, EE and Vodafone have acquired spectrum in both 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands, while Hutchison (3UK) and Telefonica (O2) only got 800 MHz spectrum. Niche Spectrum Ventures (NSV) only has acquired spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band. Continue reading

Britain’s Ofcom ushers in prospects for ‘white space’ mobile broadband

New consultation aims to increase capacity without wrecking digital TV signals

UK regulator, Ofcom, has signalled that new City-wide Wi-Fi networks using ‘white spaces’ (the gaps in between bands of spectrum used to broadcast TV) could be up and running by Q1 2014. The announcement comes as Ofcom tries to avert a nationwide ‘capacity crunch’  and follows its own recent research revealing how Britain will need 80 times more airwave space in around 18 years (2030) than is currently needed. EE rebrands and launches 4GEE pricing

Rating: Offers free Wi-fi to offset 4G loading

The UK’s EE has announced that it will be folding the old Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile branded into EE. From the 30th October [2012], all existing Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile stores will become newly branded EE stores. As predicted, it is called it’s 4G LTE based offering – 4GEE. The launch of the EE brand will be backed by a multi-million pound marketing campaign across TV, print and digital media channels. It has also finally revealed pricing for its 4GEE services and significantly decided to move into content in a big way with EE Film. In a move which should help to off-load traffic from its 4G and 3G networks, 4GEE customers will get free access to BT Wi-fi hotspot network. It also modestly claims that its 4GEEroll-out will be the fastest roll-out of any UK network in history. Continue reading

Mixed industry reaction to Ofcom’s UK 4G announcement

Rating: Most observers see Brits as 4G laggards

There’s been a mixed reaction to yesterday’s [July 24th 2012] announcement by UK telecoms governing body, Ofcom, to plans to finally auction spectrum for use by 4G style networks. [See here]. What most observers seem to have missed is the fact that there’s no compunction to use LTE – the standard favoured by telecoms companies, over WiMAX – which IT orientated suppliers seem to prefer. There’s also no clear guidelines about what Ofcom intends to do about Everything Everywhere’s (EE’s) attempts to use existing 1800 MHz for 4G purposes. Instead Ofcom has hinted very heavily that two internationally recognised parts of the spectrum – 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz will be made available. Continue reading

Everything Everywhere W7 Mango users have to wait

Rating: Everybody Else has got the Nokia Lumia 800 update

Drat and double drat as Dick Dastardly used to say! Over here in Blighty [UK], Nokia Europe has been quietly rolling out the third update to Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango). See our previous story here. However, the update is operator specific. Initially only the likes of BT, Vodafone and some 3 UK users could receive the software update – 1600.2487.8107.12070 But if you click on the appropriate Nokia Europe support page here you’ll find that users on every other UK network except Everything Everywhere can get the update. Boo-hoo! Because GoMobile News is on the Orange network (one half of Everything Everywhere along with T-Mobile UK). Unable to tell you exactly what’s in the update, we’ll have to be content with a hot top on how to reboot a Lumia 800. Continue reading

Vodafone should buy BT – period

Rating: They’ve never taken our advice before, though

So. GoMo News was attending an excellent pre-Xmas event hosted by well-known Public Relations company, Hotwire. Naturally, we ran into a prominent UK mobile analyst who has refused to be identified but he does share a first name with us. Anyway, we got talking about the future of telecoms in the UK and concluded that Vodafone really does need to acquire BT, the UK’s entrenched fixed line Telco. It’s a natural fit for both but then telecoms companies have a long history of ignoring our advice. Continue reading

Oranges texts us to say we can save £48 per annum

Rating: & Virgin Mobile UK users can now utilise the Orange network

It’s not every day that a utility company (which is what mobile network operators effectively are) get in contact to say that they can reduce your monthly bill. Well, that’s exactly what’s just happened. We signed up for Orange Best Plan service and every six months the company reviews our existing plan to see if we could be getting a better deal from Orange. Apparently we could. However, you have to go online to review your Best Plan review – through ‘Your Account’. That wasn’t easy. We should also mention that Virgin Mobile (UK) contacted us to say that we can now use the Orange network as well. Continue reading

Telegraph implies signal blocking will affect Olympics

Rating: Think laterally -more alternatives than swapping to O2

A report in the Daily Telegraph here has caused mayhem by implying that only 02 customers will be able to make and receive calls in the corporate entertainment areas of the forthcoming London Olympics. The report alleges that this is thanks to a deal struck between O2, BT and the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG). The really contentious part is where the story says, “A combination of an O2 sponsorship deal and signal-blocking technology could spell chaos for mobile phone users.” Continue reading

UK Wi-fi provider, BT, launches Android/iPhone apps

Rating: A darker shade of Purple, harem, harem [cough]

Kind of good news for those Brits who subscribe to BT’s fixed broadband offering. There are now free iPhone and Android applications which gives BT Total Broadband customers access to free and unlimited Wi-Fi from their mobile phones. It’s easy to download this app and all you have to do is opt into the BT Fon service. Only catch? The Android UI uses a version of purple almost indistinguishable on our Motorola Dext handset’s screen. Continue reading
