madvertise finds developers charge iPad owners more for apps

Rating: Something to do with them being generally young & wealthy

Major insights into European mobile app market are being offered in the the latest madreport from madvertise – one of the largest mobile audience targeting platforms in Europe. Key findings include the fact that there are more than three times the amount of iPhone apps available to download compared to the iPad. That’s despite the fact that over 100 million iPads have been sold to date, with iPhone sales coming in only a fraction higher at 108 million. However, despite less units being sold, the iPad actually has a higher percentage of paid apps. So it’s expensive to own an iPad – that’s official. Continue reading

Rating: Developers get second bite of the cherry

Unfortunate for Fiksu but not so for Apple mobile app developers, the company had some technical difficulties with a webinar which it had to cancel at the last minute. Entitled ‘Marketing Attribution – Beyond the UDID’, we originally publicised it here but it has now been rescheduled for Friday, June 15th 2012 at 11 am EDT / 8 am PST / 4 pm BST. GoMobile News reckons it would be well worth tuning into. Below is what we said about the webinar originally here. Continue reading

A better Ice Cream Sandwich design courtesy Google

Rating: Android Design web site to help developers with V 4.0.3

A new web site Android Design from Google aimed at Android app developers – and particularly those planning to use the very latest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) – has just been announced. According to a report on Wired here the site is the result of the efforts made by Matias Duarte, the head of user experience at Android. One of this site’s most useful functions is to spell out just how the team that built Ice Cream Sandwich – which has now reached v 4.0.3 (see here) – have been thinking. It should give Android app developers a useful insight into how to create really smooth flowing apps. A key feature is the information it provides on how phones with no physical (interface) buttons can now be supported. Continue reading

Good and bad news for Nokia app developers

Rating: WP7 SDK is here but developer forum has been hacked

This week has seen some very good news for developers hoping to create apps for Nokia phones. The good news is that Microsoft has just published the latest version of the Windows Phone SDK 7.1. All current publishers of Windows Phone are being asked to use this latest SDK to update their current apps and resubmit them to take advantage of new Window Phone capabilities. Which is great if you’re planning to develop for Nokia’s WP7 handsets. The bad news is that on Monday [August 22nd 2011] the developer.nokia.com forums discussion website suffered a security breach. The site contains a database of developer forum members’ email addresses and, for around 7 per cent of those members who chose to provide them – birth dates. But, Nokia account passwords, credit card data or similarly sensitive information was not accessed during this attack. So that good news as well, really. Continue reading

The market for mobile apps is a duopoly

Rating: Between them Android & iOS account for 2/3rds of all smartphone app users says research2guidance

Android’s stellar rise in the world of mobile communications is going to give app developers serious headaches according to mobile research specialist, research2guidance. The company basically concludes that Android will not only overtake Apple in smartphone shipments but also in app store user numbers. So, in effect what was previously a monopoly with Apple easily dominating the smartphone app market, is now rapidly transforming into a duopoly. How should app developers react? Should they chase sheer numbers and defect from Apple’s iOS over to Android? Should they stick with iOS anyway? Or should they develop for both? It just so happens that research2guidance reckons it knows the answers to these questions and, in return for the folding stuff, will provide the curious with relevant reports on the subject. Continue reading

Survey finds in-app purchasing ousting app stores

Rating: Survey of app developers using Appcelerator
A survey of 2,012 Appcelerator developers carried out in conjunction with IDC has come up with some gripping conclusions. Others are more blatantly obvious – such as the significance given to Google +’s challenge to Facebook and the rise of cloud computing. We were most fascinated by the overall [...]

Things ain’t so bad for Nokia app developers says Ovum’s Cripps

Rating: Nokia’s support for WP7 could turn things around

Saying that Nokia left its app developers in limbo with the Microsoft announcement is putting it lightly. GoMo News found this official explanation here from the Nokia Forum‘s Bill Perry. Obviously reading from a script he says is that the situation is no different from when Microsoft told its Windows Mobile 6 developers to drop y their existing tools. The way forward is apparently Silverlight and XNA . Luckily GoMo News asked Tony Cripps, principal analyst for devices & platforms with Ovum to shed a little light on this subject. Continue reading

So what are their other options? At the WIP Jam event at Mobile World Congress, I was able to sit in on a fascination discussion between a group of developers on their experiences with different advertising and marketing techniques. Continue reading

There are a lot of people involved with the mobile industry who may not be programmers or software engineers, and want a clearer look at what HTML5 is and what it can do. So we’ve done one here at GoMo News! Continue reading
