Six in ten smartphones sold in UK now Android, says Kantar
But the clouds still over BlackBerry
Latest figures from market researcher Kantar confirm Android’s overwhelming dominance of the UK smartphone market, accounting for six in every ten handsets sold. But, as with the rest of the world, Kantar’s quarterly survey up to February [2013] also reveals BlackBerry as continuing to lose ground, with the once dominant manufacturer taking just 5.1 per cent of sales in the period, down from 16.8 per cent a year ago.
Samsung tops European sales league
But much of demand is in low-end phones
Korean manufacturer Samsung has emerged as Europe’s dominant mobile phone player, grabbing almost half of sales in the last three months according to market analysts Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Smartphone sales were driven by Samsung’s release of its flagship Galaxy S3 phone plus the growing popularity of Google’s Android operating system which runs on its phones and which accounted for two thirds of its European sales. Sony Ericsson losing out in UK Android battle

Sony Ericsson was being squeezed out by HTC and Samsung as its share of UK Android sales dropped down to just 8.5 per cent compared to 20.5 per cent last year [2010]. Meanwhile HTC has managed to maintain its grip on the British Android market taking 44.8 per cent of Android sales in the past 12 weeks. – according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech (KWC). Samsung is close behnind HTC with sales of the Galaxy S II and Ace handsets driving its share of Android sales up to 37.9 per cent compared with 25.2 per cent in 2010. Other interesting findings are that RIM is still second in the UK smartphone market whilst Nokia is the lead phone supplier in Brazil. Continue reading
Android dominates smartphone OS market, again, again & again

This is today’s [July 11th 2011] headline on The Guardian‘s web site here … “Android is now the top smartphone OS in eight key countries,” writes our old mate, Charles Arthur. The story goes on to say that, “Android is now the top smartphone OS in six of eight key countries having edged past Nokia’s Symbian in Spain, according to the latest quarterly sample data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.” You’ve be forgiven for thinking that discovery might actually be news. Unfortunately, it is the third time (at least) that these same researchers have come to that particular conclusion. Back in June [2011], Mobile Magazine here ran almost the same story as “Android dominates the smartphone market.” However, with a little bit of digging you’ll find that on Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’ own web site here, it declared “Android dominates the smartphone market.” That report here dates from 7th March 2011.
