GoMo watches Formula One on a RAZR smartphone
Rating: BBC’s Media Player saves the day on Android
Over the last weekend [3rd-4th November 2012], GoMobile News struggled to watch the Formula One motor racing live in the UK. But then we discovered that it was possible to play ‘catch up’ by using the BBC’s iPlayer service. The question was – how? And the answer proved to be watching via iPlayer on a Motorola RAZR (XT910). Naturally, the screen size – even on the RAZR – was more than a little bit disappointing. Luckily, the RAZR has a built in HDMI port. So using an extremely low cost HDMI cable purchased from eBay, we were able to plug the RAZR into a regular flat screen TV set. This gave us the screen size we needed but not quite the resolution. We’re working on that bit. Continue reading
BSkyB updates its Sky Sports for iPad app for more F1 action
Rating: GoMo discovers the best way to watch Sky F1 via iOS
BSkyB offers a number of apps to iOS owners. However, just in time for the Santander formula 1 British Grand prix 2012 on July 8th, the satellite TV broadcaster has updated its Sky Sports of iPad app which can be found here. The new ‘F1 companion experience’ features split-screen technology – allowing users to simultaneously follow action from two different cameras angles. The updated Sky Sports for iPad app is available for free from Apple’s iTunes App Store but it is also available to non-Sky customers on a standalone basis for £4.99 per month through in-app purchase. Don’t be fooled by this last option, though. Non-Sky customers still won’t have access to the F1 channel through the paid-for app. You want the Sky Sports TV app for that. Continue reading
Bet2Go revises its mobile offering to support WP7
Rating:
Just in time for the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 8th 2012, Bet2Go has launched an all-new version of its app for smartphones. Not only has the UI been improved but the company claims it is quicker to bet with this new release. The most impressive part about this announcement is that Bet2Go has trawled its support database and discovered that this latest release covers a previous problem GoMobile News encountered with this app. Namely that it wouldn’t work on a Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) handset (the Nokia Lumia 800). We can confirm that the ‘other smartphones’ version of the app is compatible with W7 Mango. Continue reading
Formula One app for Sony TVs discovered by chance
Rating: Came across this Beeb app when researching connected TV
Chatting with Jim Somers, who is chief marketing and strategy officer, from Antenna Software, he let slip that if mobile/cellular is going to face a challenge in the future it will be from IP/connected TV. That challenge will especially apply when it comes to shares of the global advertising pie. GoMobile News had always assumed that IP TV is always allied to fixed broadband but Somers pointed out that that’s not necessarily the case. In rural areas connectivity could be supplied by some form of 4G – whether it’s LTE or WiMAX based. So whilst doing some background research, we discovered that the BBC has just announced the availability of a Formula 1 app for Sony TVs. Continue reading
GoMo discovers neat F1 Timing app on official site
Rating: A great way to keep track of your favourite Formula One driver
Here at GoMobile Towers we’re pretty much a bunch of petrolheads and the Formula One Grand Prix is our special favourite. The snag is that currently here in Blighty (the UK), certain races are only shown live on pay-per-view TV. In our case, BSkyB’s Sky F1 channel. Now the normal way for any Brit to deal with such a situation is to go down the pub (bar) and watch F1 on the big screen. The trouble is that the UK is a nation of footie and rugby fans and there’s a Spain versus Italy soccer match right in the middle of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. Trying to sort out this mess, GoMobile News happened to visit Formula One’s mobile friendly web site – http://mobile.formula1.com/ where we noticed the official F1 2012 Timing app. We just had to download it. Be careful when upgrading your handset to watch F1
Rating: Only seven Android models support SkyGo
The difference between iOS and Android is put into perspective by the ability to run Sky TV’s Sky Go app on your smartphone/tablet. This app was finally made available on February 23rd [2012] but it only runs on a tiny number of Android phones. The list of which seven models from HTC (5) and Samsung (2) support Sky Go is given below. Sky attributes the very short list to the “considerable time” it takes to tailor the app for each distinct Android device. If you want to watch Formula One (F1) motor racing on you Android handset you need to possess one of the seven. The easiest way to find out whether you need to upgrade or not is simply to try to download the app from Google Play (the new name for the Android Market). You can download the Sky Go from Google Play here‘ Sadly our loan Motorola Razr isn’t on the list. UK mortgage comparison site targets Apple F1 petrol heads
Rating: Hurry to win £100 worth of iTunes vouchers
In what we suspect is a desperate bid to promote the fact its MortgagesUK iPhone app is nearly ready, Mortgage Brain has launched its Fantasy F1 competition. Competitors are offered the chance to win iTunes vouchers worth up to £100. It’s actually quite feasible to play this game on your mobile phone as we discovered with our Nokia Lumia 800 W7 Mango phone. GoMobile News would recommend that initially you register using a desktop computer or tablet, though. With the Nokia we also found it handy to register with a Hotmail email address. You’d better get cracking, though, because the deadline to create your own Formula One Fantasy team seems to be today [March 16th 2012] at 5pm GMT. Continue reading
BBC iPlayer for BlackBerryused to watch live sports
Rating: How to follow F1 on Android & lesser BlackBerries
Last weekend provided an excellent excuse to try out the BlackBerry Bold which RIM has so kindly lent GoMo News for software testing purpose. The aim was to try out the recently released iPlayer TV for BlackBerry from the BBC and objective was to be able to watch the re-run of the Formula One GP in Brazil. There are two drawbacks to the BlackBerry version of the iPlayer. The first is that it runs on only a limited set of BlackBerry models (so we found alternatives for other BlackBerries). The second snag is that the BBC very heavily suggests that the app should only be run over a Wi-Fi link. Continue reading
TV chips answer to 3g data congestion says Telegent
Rating: Free-to-air TV and satellite inside your phone
Following up on the news that Swisscom has quietly dropped its DVB-H based service, specialist chip provider, Telegent Systems, tells us that the way forward is free-to-air TV services. What you want inside a mobile phone, the company argues, is a chip that provides access to terrestrial TV and even free satellite stations, Telegent reckons. Continue reading
