IDATE launches latest DigitalWorld Yearbook
Rating: It’s an industry Bible and Goldmine of useful stats rolled into one
GoMobile News had the pleasure of attending the launch of the DigiWorld Yearbook 2012 in London. This publication is now in its 12th year and has rapidly established itself as something of a Bible for the mobile industry – although in effect its remit covers the entire digital economy. What we took away from this launch was the publication’s conclusion that there are three big game changers at work within the cellular industry: – mobile everywhere; content in the cloud; and big data. The launch was accompanies by a keynote speech from Olaf Swantee, CEO, Everything Everywhere. He used the opportunity to make an impassioned plea for his company to be able to roll out 4G in the 1800 MHz spectrum. Continue reading
French provide geolocation capability to Gaddafi spies
Rating: BBC finds Amesys info in Tripoli spy centre
An explosive TV report from courageous BBC news reporter, Orla Guerin, inside Colonel Gaddafi’s Homeland Security Headquarters in Tripoli accidentally exposes the role played by France’s Amesys in helping the Libyan spy operation. The report aired on the BBC News yesterday (August 29th 2011) clearly shows Amesys’ log and details of a presentation on the walls of the Libyan centre. It is clear from the bulletpoints from the presentation that Amesys technology was providing the Libyans with a cellular geolocation capability that could be used to track suspects. Separately, the report showed Trust’s ISDN software. GoMo News has long suspected that ISDN engineers’ sets (butt phones) can be used to hack mobile phones. Continue reading

Orange lures developers with Partner Connect
Rating: Great way to monetise your Android apps
At a stroke Orange appears to have grabbed a big slice of the Android app market with its Orange Partner Connect programme. The global operator (part of France Telecom) is offering developers a 70/30 revenue share on any apps they sell via the Orange App Shop. The ace up the sleeve is that Orange customers will not only be able to pay in their local currency but also via their phone bills. Orange is also offering developers help with app creation and the chance to plough some of their initial earnings back in promoting their wares on the Orange App Store itself. Continue reading

Should the advertising of mobile devices to children be banned? The French think it might be a good idea.
Apparently the Ministry of the Environment in France is considering banning adverts of mobile devices to kids under the age of 13. This comes after a growing number of reports suggest that over-exposure to devices, especially amongst the very young, might cause cancer.
A proposed law would make it illegal to promote the sale and use [...]
SFR Mobile Keyword Search
So, the presentation by SFR’s Mauro Di Pasquale at the Mobixell conference was spectacular. I am sitting on top of a heap of mobile statistics and operator stats for WAP click through rates, targeting, strategy and other lovely things that I can’t publish. But what I can publish and what I thought was a simple [...]
Orange BIC Razor Sharp phone?
I got a press release from Orange and it was for a new brand BIC. I was laughing to myself thinking how stupid Orange was naming a phone after a throw away razor.
You can image my surprise when – SHRIEK – it is the razor company behind it and this is the new ready to [...]
