GoMo’s protect your smartphone advice for Xmas
Rating: Inspired by Stonesoft’s Top ten tips
.We all know that significant numbers of handsets – especially smartphones, will be given as Xmas presents this year. However, consumers don’t naturally associate mobile phones with threats from hackers, viruses and malware. As Ash Patel, regional director with Stonesoft, says, “To a consumer, cybercrime may seem a distant threat that is mostly related to espionage between nation-states or hacking against big enterprises.” However, mobile devices are very easy to steal as we’ve reported before but they can contain seriously damaging personal data – such as credit card information and even login details for social networks. So Stonesoft has put together its own Top Ten tips on mobile security for Xmas time. Sound advice but not always entirely practical. Continue reading

Rating: World’s largest app store decides to give away premium apps
Given that (to date) all of its apps have been available for free, GetJar naturally became the world’s largest free mobile app store. Now, in a complete revolution, consumers are offered GetJar Gold – a programme that gives consumers free ongoing access to premium applications that they would otherwise have had to pay for on other app stores. Those same premium Android apps which cost up to $10 on the Android Market or in the Amazon App Store are now offered free as part of GetJar Gold. With 30 million active monthly users, GetJar is set to give away millions of dollars worth of apps. GoMo News is impressed by this bold move. Continue reading

Flexion’s wrapper enables 1 free mobile app trial per/sec
Rating: developers stand better chance of making money from apps
Android and Java ‘wrappers’ from Flexion are currently enabling more than one free trial per second, the company claims. It also maintains that it is adding over four million new consumers per month to its platform. Jens Lauritzson, CEO with Flexion explained, “Instead of making developers add billing SDKs to their game code, we let them wrap their products with the Flexion wrapper which automatically enables in-app billing for products. These can then be distributed via app stores as free downloads.” As an example of Flarion’s technology, Nokia customers in 68 markets can now download any Java game from EA and play it for free before deciding whether to commit to a purchase. Purchases are then made securely via operator billing via the Flexion wrapper. The wrapper comes with an add-on feature called Discovery, Flexion’s on device portal, to promote more games to customers. Continue reading

Will Brit Royal wedding crash the mobile networks?
Rating: GoMo News does its bit to help
With any major event – like the Womad music festival, for example – you’re going to have large numbers of people congregated in a small area where there are normally only a few masts. The forthcoming wedding of Britain’s Prince William to Kate Price Middleton, is going to cause mega headaches. Luckily, at least one of the UK’s four major operators – o2 -has been planning ahead for some time. If you want to plan ahead as well, you might want to work out how to stream TV coverage to your handset. Or you might want to download mxData ‘s Tube Map app in time to avoid the congestion on London’s streets. Continue reading
GetJar responds to IDGA rant vs Amazon
Rating: Apparently, all’s not fair …
The International Game Developers Association (IDGA) has recently written an open letter to online app store Amazon about unfair pricing practices on Amazon App store. It can be found here. The letter says, “The IGDA has significant concerns about Amazon’s current Appstore distribution terms and the negative impact they may have on the game development community, and we urge developers to educate themselves on the pros and cons of submitting content to Amazon. This letter has inspired Patrick Mork, CMO of GetJar, to blog about the matter himself. Continue reading
How to easily join in the app store wars
Rating: Our DIY guide to becoming an app store owner
We were recently notified that two domain names, AppShow.com and AppShow.net, have been put up for sale and offers are being accepted via email up until April 6th 2011. That’s a pretty reasonable URL to turn into an app store, we think. But what about the backend systems? That’s a piece of cake because Appia is doing such a good business by providing ‘white-label’ app stores that it has recently scored an extra a $10 million investment from VC company, Venrock. Appia now powers more than 40 app stores worldwide which cover over 200 mobile subscribers. Continue reading

GetJar is one of the biggest app stores in the world, brushing shoulders with Apple’s App Store and the Android market. Today it releases the results of a massive commissioned survey, showing that 40% of those surveyed claimed they will switch from iPhone to Android with their next smartphone purchase, and that only 25% of people discover the apps they buy on actual app stores. GetJar’s Mork comments on App Store subs
Rating: Subscriptions are a good thing – mostly
“Subscription is a good thing because it allows publishers to monetize in a way that maximizes user value,” commented Patrick Mork, GetJar‘s CMO. It’s also a good thing because it gives publishers “the flexibility to charge consumers based on their preferences – i.e. one time payment versus cheaper periodic payments.” Subscription is also good for publishers since it allows them generate recurring billing which is more profitable for their bottom line. GetJar gets USD 25 Million in Series C Funding and one GoMo News Prediction
Yikes. I remember meeting Ilja Laurs years ago when GetJar was a tiny blimp on the mobile app space and he was delighted with USD 7 million funding from Accel Partners. A few years on and its USD 25 Million in Series C from Tiger Global Managent.

GetJar’s top predictions for 2011
Rating: Some self-evident, some insightful, some could fail
While the month of August brings us the silly season, December is inevitably the month for predictions. So we were particularly intrigued by the musings of Ilja Laurs – who heads up GetJar – for 2011. The first thing we noticed is that Ilja appears to have got bored and stopped at seven predictions – three short of ten. Never mind because buried in here are some real insights that get you wondering. Better still, we can go back to Ilja in 2011 and mark him out of ten. At GoMo News we aren’t too swift to scorn at new ideas, either. When Nokia predicted everyone would change their ringtones, some people actually laughed. Continue reading
