Here’s a way of accessing highly accurate location information with an ordinary mobile phone. A GPS/GSM capable wristwatch which doesn’t even require a Bluetooth connection – the GPS watch uses SMS instead. Better still no-one would know you’re carrying a GPS receiver because it looks like a normal digital watch.

picture-13The Virgin Mobile strategy for spreading to new countries is pretty well established. It partners with an existing carrier in the country, and offers its own branded services over its partner’s network. In India, the Virgin Mobile partnership is 50-50 with indigenous operator Tata Teleservices. But Tata runs a CDMA network, which has much less coverage in India than the dominant GSM networks. So Virgin has announced a new GSM service, an ad campaign targeting a youth audience, and new reductions in call and SMS rates.

The annual Chaos Communications Congress is a meeting of international hackers, who convene to share information, listen to lectures and attend workshops. This year one of the speakers, a German encryption specialist, has really put the wind up the mobile scene - by claiming to have completely broken through the encryption code that keeps mobile calls on GSM networks safe from monitoring.

tatadocomoWe recently announced the launch of TATA DOCOMO. The operator is a branch of Indian company Tata Teleservices, heavily funded by Japanese giant NTT DOCOMO. The entire purpose of TATA DOCOMO is to spread a GSM mobile network all across India. This week has see the venture launching in two separate Indian territories.
