Guest Post: Top smartphone processors
by Sherrie McCallum, a technology specialist blogger
The smartphone processor race is set to experience another series of landmarks in 2013, with NVIDIA, Qualcomm and ARM all targeting increased speeds and better memory for chips. High end handsets like the iPhone 5 to the Motorola RAZR i, the Samsung Galaxy III, and the soon to be released Galaxy IV, feature some of the best smartphone processors on the market. The recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA also highlighted some key future trends in terms of new processors, with the processor market as a whole increasing profits in 2012 by 30 per cent, or $13.5 billion to $16.5 billion. What, then, are the best smartphone processors currently available, or soon to be launched? Continue reading
Shares in Imagination dive as it reveals higher research costs
Needs to out-bid Ceva for the patents library of MIPS
Shares in UK chip maker Imagination Technologies closed more than five per cent down at close of London trading last night [12th December 2012] after it emerged that higher research costs are dragging down profits. The company is currently entangled in a bidding war with rival Ceva to acquire US-based chip designer MIPS, though Ceva’s $90 million offer looks the favourite at present. Continue reading
Intel hooks up with ITV & Shazam for interactive ad
Rating: Get ready to Shazamduring X Factor final
Here in Blighty (UK), it seems that Intel has been looking at some creative ways to promote its new range of Ultrabook Convertible tablets on the run up to Xmas. It just so happens that ITV has an exclusive partnership to distribute Shazam‘s functionality in UK broadcast advertising sector. So – thanks to OMD UK, a specially modified version of the Intel ad will be aired during the show which will be able to feature user-generated content (UGC) thanks to Shazam’s technology. Of course, this isn’t the first time the Shazam app has been deployed in British broadcasting. ITV aired a Shazam enabled ad back in May [2012] during a Britain’s Got Talent TV finale. (See our previous report here). Continue reading

Motorola surprises with not for USA RAZR i
Rating: It’s all about speed, battery life & Intel Inside
Here in sunny Blighty [UK], Motorola Mobility launched another model in its Android RAZR family which hasn’t been seen before – the RAZR i. The crucial advantages Motorola has is access to both Google (its parent) for Android optimisation and innovation plus Intel for its microprocessor skills. This handset is going to be billed as the “full-screen phone” in its ads, although GoMobile News wasn’t sure this message was delivered effectively in the TV advert which we saw screened. What the i is about, however, is speed. Continue reading
Forget 12, it’s 18 here in Europe says Motorola
Rating: Just pretend you don’t know the RAZRs have already launched
You have to admire Motorola’s timing. Just hours before a certain big event takes place in San Francisco around 6 pm (here in Blighty), the company has sent UK hacks an intriguing invite. We’re asked to attend an “exclusive launch event” six days from now – Tuesday 18th September [2012]. It’s entitled, “Let us take you to the Edge”. Given that this launch is co-hosted with Intel, it isn’t too difficult to guess what the event will showcase. As a hint we intend to publish the full specs of the new RAZR M, RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD here. Continue reading

UK chip designer ARM’s domination of the smartphone market could be facing a major upset in the next few days when Google’s Motorola subsidiary unveils a new Android device expected to be powered by an Intel processor.
Invites are currently being sent out for the US launch of the device in two days’ time [5th September 2012] and in London in just over a fortnight. Continue reading

Telmap’s CMO, Motti Kushnir, on being Intel’s LBS arm
Rating: Location Based Service (LBS) is the next big battleground
Never a dull moment when you chat with Motti Kushnir who is Telmap’s CMO. He was explaining to GoMo News the thinking around chip maker, Intel’s, acquisition of the Israeli company back in November [2011]. Incidentally, Kushnir actually pointed out that if you took the software and services division out of Intel, it would probably be the third largest software house in the world. Today [February 23rd 2012], Telmap announced the impending release of its version 6.0 of the Telmap Mobile Location Companion service. However, what Kushnir had to say about the whole LBS sector was intriguing. Like, if Apple doesn’t make LBS a central feature of the iPhone 5 (when that eventually sees the light of day), it will be dead in the water. Continue reading
LiMo Foundation hits out at app store duopoly
Rating: Web apps are prospective third ecosystem
The executive director of the LiMo Foundation, Morgan Gillis, has hit out at weaknesses in the existing app regime. He argued that, “There are still some drawbacks with the existing pair of dominant ecosystems.” Gillis was speaking at the recent GSMA Mobile Asia Congress 2011 in Hong Kong (see report). Gillis didn’t name names but he was obviously talking about the two dominant mobile app stores – Apple’s iTunes and Google’s Android Market. Significantly, Gillis hinted that there could be an alternative – web based apps are prospective third mobile apps ecosystem. We assume this is a reference to apps based on HTML5 in particular because they can potentially run on all the major mobile OS and so are effectively platform agnostic. Continue reading
Intel acquires mapping expert – Telmap
Rating: Just as Nokia shuts down Navteq
Intel chose a keynote speech at app developers conference in Seattle (any irony here?) to announce that it had signed an agreement to acquire Telmap which will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel. The news comes at the same time Nokia was forced to announce that it is closing down its NAVTEQ mapping and location based services (LBS) operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, USA with an expected loss of 1,300 jobs. The contrast couldn’t possibly be greater. GoMo News can only speculate that Intel might have decided to go for Telmap as a means of avoiding any reliance on Google Maps. Don’t forget, Intel hasn’t entirely given up on MeeGo, either. Continue reading
ITU Telecom World won’t be moving to Barcelona
Rating: Assurance from new rival to MWC
The ITU’s Telecom World exhibition and conference is undergoing a massive transformation. According to Blaise Judja-Sato, executive manager with ITU Telecom, the whole format for future Telecom World events is up in the air. Firstly the intention is to make it an annual event rather than just once every four years. Secondly, the organisers are contemplating moving the whole thing to other cities besides Geneva. However, Judja-Sato assured GoMo News that Barcelona is not on his list. He joked that the new venue might be Paris, Milan or Munich – all cities recently rejected by the GSMA as a possible site for its Mobile World Capital (see our story here). What’s obvious is that there will be far more focus on mobile communications than at previous events – reflecting the growing importance of mobile as a communications media – especially in the developing world. Continue reading
Intel gives away MeeGo tablet – we can’t buy one
Rating: Apparently there is a MeeGo notebook from Fujitsu
Still smarting from the lack of an Intel announcement re the MeeGo OS, GoMo News has done a little digging. To our surprise, we discovered that there is actually supposed to be a MeeGo powered device available from Fujitsu. It’s the MH330 and there’s even a precise price – $ 380.57. The catch is … just you try to buy one. We searched most of the Asia Pacific where the product really is supposed to be shipping with no joy. So instead we’ve decided to publicise an Intel incentive for app developers which is known as AppUp developer challenge. Continue reading
Is Intel just about to launch its first Meego tablet?
Rating: Great rumours of our time
Bored with waiting for Californians to wake up and put us out of our misery, GoMo News has decided to go with the rumour anyway that Intel is on the verge of launching its first MeeGo powered tablet. The rumour comes from a very reliable source and makes a great [...]
Nokia took the Redmond shilling to switch to WP7 says Intel
Rating: Intel’s Otellini says both Microsoft & Google offered money
Reports from the London meeting between Intel‘s CEO, Paul Otellini, and analysts say that Nokia‘s decision to go with Windows Phone 7 (WP7) was financially motivated. Reuters quotes Otellini (here) as saying Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, received “incredible offers — money” from Google and Microsoft to switch mobile OS. Otellini himself believes that Elop should have taken Google’s money. However, Intel still has high hopes that MeeGo – the OS it was jointly developing with Nokia – has legs. Indeed, the chip maker is looking around for a partner to replace Nokia for MeeGo. Continue reading
