Novel way to push the iPhone from O2 – leasing
Rating: You’re only stuck with it for 12 months
One of the biggest problems facing smartphone owners – certainly in the UK – is that their smartphone has become way out of date before the end of the contract. Especially since consumers are signing themselves up for 18 and 24 month contracts. This is a problem especially for would-be iPhone owners because there’s little point trying to look cool with your Apple device if its so old it won’t even upgrade to iOS 5.0. So, O2 UK has come up with what it believes it a novel solution – leasing the iPhone. That way there are no up front costs for the device. Plus, at the end of the 12 month contract, customers will be able to return the device to O2 and take out a newer handset (assuming the iPhone 5 does finally launch) on a similar scheme. Or, alternatively update to another O2 contract. Continue reading
Apple blames supply chain issues for coming second with iPhone 4S
Rating: Well, if you’re up against the world leader what do you expect?
Apple has largely blamed supply chain issues for its failure to take the Number One slot in a UK chart for better selling smartphones. It was pipped by the Samsung Galaxy S II which just so happens to have been the best-selling device (in the UK) for eight consecutive months. The Press Association reported that The 4S’ failure to snatch the top slot from a smartphone which has been around for ages was “because retailers cannot stock it quickly enough to keep up with demand.” Observers seem to overlook the fact that this particular Samsung handset is an Android handset. Currently the iPhone 4S is available on Softbank (formerly Vodafone Japan) and KDDI’s au network. Continue reading
iPhone 4S available for free in Hong Kong
Rating: Of course, you have to sign a two year contract
GoMo News received a missive from Hong Kong operator, CSL, which uses the 1010 brand for its network. As of November 11th [2011], it’s actually possible to get an iPhone 4S for free. This applies to the 8GB and 16 GB versions not the 32 GB or 64 GB versions. You have to sign a two year contract and the minimum one appears to be HK $177. That about £14 so you’d be spending a minimum of £340. Continue reading
Siri shows natural language as key UI element
Rating: Apple’s John Scully’s Knowledge Navigator comes true
GoMo News had a sneaking feeling that the announcements made by Apple about the Siri personal assistant as a key feature of the iPhone 4S might have been more important than the impression first given. Well, Bill Meisel, editor of Speech Strategy News, is adamant that we’ve all underestimated Siri’s significance. Sadly, Bill goes into far too much detail here about it here but we’ll try to summarise. We particularly liked the bit where Bill says that incorporating natural language understanding is a classic extension of the Apple philosophy that you shouldn’t need a user manual to be able to perform a particular task.
