Motorola surprises with not for USA RAZR i
Rating: It’s all about speed, battery life & Intel Inside
Here in sunny Blighty [UK], Motorola Mobility launched another model in its Android RAZR family which hasn’t been seen before – the RAZR i. The crucial advantages Motorola has is access to both Google (its parent) for Android optimisation and innovation plus Intel for its microprocessor skills. This handset is going to be billed as the “full-screen phone” in its ads, although GoMobile News wasn’t sure this message was delivered effectively in the TV advert which we saw screened. What the i is about, however, is speed. Continue reading
Vodafone 555 – the dedicated Facebook phone
Rating: Ideal for youngsters & budget users
We have always like the whole concept of having a handset which is dedicated to providing easy access to Facebook. Of all the social networks, in the UK this is very obviously the one to pick. Therefore, Vodafone has definitely found a niche in the market with its Vodafone 555 Blue handset. Whilst appreciating that the 555 is particularly aimed at pre-paid customers, GoMo News initially didn’t realise this is very obviously a handset aimed at those on a tight budget. This makes the 555 an ideal handset for developing countries, of course. We eventually managed to find the associated PC suite software as well. Continue reading
How to install Kindle on a UK TouchPad
Rating: Beating the non-US block on a webOS device
It’s just like Google’s Music beta service which the search engine company is determined to restrict to US citizens only. For some reason Amazon in its infinite wisdom has decided not to allow non-US citizens to use the Kindle app on webOS devices. This seems to be despite the fact that the iOS and Android versions of the Kindle app are global. So GoMo News had to search for a way to beat this blocker. And thanks to a posting on Amazon’s own Kindle forum here, we’ve discovered a solution. This solution will cover installing other webOS apps which for some reason aren’t available via the HP App Catalog. It assumes you’re using a Windows based PC to install apps onto a webOS device. Anyway, Appitalism.com – which is operated by Mobile Streams and claims to be the world’s largest app store – has just introduced a new global app distribution program which it calls Appitalism Wings. This new service is aimed at app developers who want to maximise their return on investment (RoI). It provides apps producers with additional distribution channels which specifically apply to their content. All this without the need to sign or spend time on multiple integrations and agreements. Flexion’s wrapper enables 1 free mobile app trial per/sec
Rating: developers stand better chance of making money from apps
Android and Java ‘wrappers’ from Flexion are currently enabling more than one free trial per second, the company claims. It also maintains that it is adding over four million new consumers per month to its platform. Jens Lauritzson, CEO with Flexion explained, “Instead of making developers add billing SDKs to their game code, we let them wrap their products with the Flexion wrapper which automatically enables in-app billing for products. These can then be distributed via app stores as free downloads.” As an example of Flarion’s technology, Nokia customers in 68 markets can now download any Java game from EA and play it for free before deciding whether to commit to a purchase. Purchases are then made securely via operator billing via the Flexion wrapper. The wrapper comes with an add-on feature called Discovery, Flexion’s on device portal, to promote more games to customers. Continue reading

neXva’s multi OS app store woos developers
Rating: Mobile payment system could prove tasty, too
One of our quests here at GoMo News is to help mobile app developers escape the tyranny and arbitrary behaviour of the big app store operators. So we were intrigued by an approach made to us by the multi OS app store, neXva. The company was pushing its neXliner tool which employs QR codes and looks pretty handy. However, what really sparked our interest is its neXpayer payment tool which is adding new payment mechanisms. Plus the company will soon be launching an in app payment SDK that will facilitate one click payments from within mobile apps and works across most mobile OS. Continue reading
Opera retaliates by opening its own Opera Mobile app store
Rating: If-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em
Much as predicted by us here, Opera Software has adopted a if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em strategy and open its own app store. Labelled the Opera Mobile Store, it offers a wide catalogue of applications for Java, Symbian, BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile and Android based smartphones. [Notice there's no iOS apps.] Better still, amongst all the free applications there is a good proportion of paid-for apps. So those developers disenchanted with the Android Market, for example, have an outlet for their wares. Android Developers Union please take note. There’s even a portal to help app developers add their software to the Store. Continue reading
Over 35 % clicked on in-app ad in Numo trial
Rating: Best results achieved with Opera Mini browser
Last week, Numo disclosed the results of its first ever trials of an in-app advertising campaign. Numo’s CEO, Trond Ingebretsen, commented, “We are proud to see that we have experienced that above 35 per cent of the users clicked on the ad.” Trond’s being very modest, of course, because 35 per cent is an exceptionally high rate for any form of advertising medium. “This shows that a smart ad that is correctly presented in the right application is a very cost effective way of spending marketing money,” Ingebretsen concluded. Continue reading

Standard Chartered’s rumoured switch to iPhone
Rating: More of an end user rebellion than sea change
There have been reports on the news wires that famous Bank, Standard Chartered’s 75,000 staff use, will be swapping over to using Apple’s iPhones rather than the established RIM BlackBerry. The switch will probably be less extensive than wholesale but nevertheless, the damage has been done. Continue reading
