GSMA hooks up with Metaio for AR guide to MWC

Rating: See the MWC 2012 ad spring to life in augmented reality

Explore the Mobile World Congress of 2012 in augmented reality thanks to an alliance between leading augmented reality(AR) specialist, Metaio, and the show’s organiser – the GSMA (GSM Association). The pair offer owners of Android or IOS device the opportunity to walk through an interactive 360° world view of the conference. Or to make the print advertisement come to life in 3D. The actual AR layar seems to have been created for the GSMA by TAB Worldmedia – a Dutch company. We wondered why only Android and iOS devices were covered but then we realised, of course, that Metaio has only created its Junaio AR plug-in for those two mobile OS. So visitors to Barcelona with BlackBerries or W7 Mango handsets (like the Nokia Lumia 800) are left out in the cold. Continue reading

Augmented Reality goes stellar in Germany

Rating: Stern magazine get into bed with Metaio/Junaio

The September 1st [2011] edition of the leading German news magazine, Stern, not only devotes a large section to discussing augmented reality (AR), but also uses the technology to enhance the whole issue. Readers can get a demo of AR in action by downloading a dedicated app labelled Stern AR. The September issue contains custom symbols printed on a number of pages. This is something of a coup for Metaio, whose Junaio AR browser app provides the basis for this technology. Here at GoMo News we’ve been investigating producing channels for the Junaio app ourselves. What Stern has done is to simplify the whole procedure. You don’t need to download the AR browser separately and then add a Stern ‘channel’. You can download the Stern AR app from either the iTunes App Store or the Android Market. Continue reading

AR stamps prove big disappointment

Rating: Reading them is far too complex

Despite lengthy efforts to do so, GoMo News has still be unable to ‘read’ the content hidden away on a set of Great British Railways stamps from the UK’s Royal Mail. It illustrates how complex the process of viewing content using Metaio‘s Junaio browser really is. Quite frankly, if this site hadn’t had serious contact with Metaio previously we’d conclude that the whole thing is a hoax. Continue reading

Augmented reality hits British stamps courtesy of Metaio

Ratings works with iOS4 and some Android handsets

There’s some kind of irony in picking steam trains as the theme for the world’s first ‘intelligent stamp’ but the UK’s Royal Mail has done just that. Actually, they should properly be described as the world’s first AR (Augmented Reality) stamps since they employ technology developed by Metaio. Consequently the stamps can only be read by iPhones running iOS4 and Android handsets running 1.6 or above via Metaio’s Junaio browser.

The first reports of these stamps had GoMo News somewhat confused and desperately trying to see a barcode hidden in stamps’ design. Instead it uses image recognition built into Metaio’s Junaio browser. Continue reading

Rating: We can’t find the Android AR browser, though
