BMW’s connected car offers streamed music thru rara
Powered by Vodafone across five European countries
It appears that the connected car (or smart vehicle) has suddenly become all of the rage. At the forefront, it seems is BMW which has just launched Europe’s first in-car music streaming service in association with rara.com. Crucially, no smartphone; (user supplied) SIM card, or dongle is needed. Instead rara.com streams its music catalogue of 14 million plus music tracks direct to a new BMW 5 Series fitted with a ConnectedDrive online entertainment system. The service is powered by Vodafone – an interesting use of M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communications. Crucially this means that you can drive across UK, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands and still be connected thanks to Vodafone. Continue reading

Apple needs to attract to emerging markets to keep smartphone crown
Rating: Juniper smartphone research show small rise for Apple
It seems that Apple managed a small rise in its smartphone shipments according to the latest estimates from mobile analyst firm, Juniper Research. Overall, around 200 million smartphones are estimated to have been shipped in Q1 2013. No surprises for guessing who came out best. Samsung’s estimated 68 million smartphones represent 34 per cent of all smartphone shipments in the quarter. So, if Apple is to retain its smartphone crown, it will have to take drastic steps. GoMo releases Direct operator Billing 101
Rating: All-you-want to-know-about DoB/DOC
Mobile network operators have come to realise that their own portals have effectively lost the battle to online giants such as Google, Apple, and Amazon. For example, according to a recent report from Juniper Research, sales through operator portals presently account for some six per cent of content downloads worldwide. By contrast, Google’s Play and Apple’s iTunes App Store now comprise nearly 70 per cent between them. We’d argue. however, by far the most elegant solution for mobile subscribers is an instant mobile payments system as offered by Direct operator Billing (DoC) – otherwise known as Direct Carrier Billing (DCB).
