ZTE wins design award & signs deal with Nuance
Rating: Chinese manufacturer’s innovation recognised
Here at GoMobile News we are not the least surprised to learn that up-and-coming Chinese mobile phone producer, ZTE, has just won an award for one of its smartphones. The handset was officially launched at the CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The ZTE Grand S – 5.0 FHD LTE has won the prestigious the 2013 iF International Design Award. The ZTE Grand S was picked by a judging team comprised of 49 top international designers and stood out amongst 4,325 entries from 51 countries. It’s not the only major news to come out from ZTE this week. The company has also just announced a major tie up with digital voice specialist Nuance Communications. The pair aim to collaborate on a range of devices and apps which will incorporate Nuance’s voice capabilities for ZTE Android phone range. Continue reading
Guest Post: Time for comms to get real in 2013
by Mark Windle, head of marketing with OpenCloud
The arrival of LTE around the globe and in the UK was one of the defining features of 2012. Operators are under increasing pressure from Over-The-Top (OTT) services and are looking to use LTE spectrum to develop innovative IP-based services to catch up with other offerings on the market and defend their market share in the voice, messaging and video calling marketplace. During 2013, I expect to see some interesting innovations from operators as they look to claw back market share from OTT players, protect their revenues, and reconnect with the consumer. However, they won’t be the only ones looking for something new. Continue reading
Guest Post: operators to play havoc with Wi-fi
by Steve Hratko, director of marketing with Ruckus Wireless
2012 has seen widespread adoption of Wi-fi by mobile operators. In fact, Ovum Research expects carrier Wi-fi equipment shipments to increase by 84 per cent this year [2012] and continue double-digit growth through 2017.In July 2012, O2 announced the deployment of high-capacity small cells in London to deliver fast and reliable Wi-fi. Other operators have also announced plans to deploy Wi-fi to provide extra capacity in dense metro areas and this trend is set to continue in 2013. Here’s my take on what 2013 will bring. Guest Post: EU approves re-farming of 2.1GHz 3G band to LTE
What does this mean for mobile technology harmonisation?
by Stefan Zehle, CEO with Coleago Consulting
On the November 5th [2012] the European Commission decided to open the current 3G 2.1 GHz band (IMT Band 1) for 4G. This follows the liberalisation of the 1800 MHz and 900 MHz bands for GSM. In its press release the EU states, “The decision enforces the harmonised liberalisation of the 2 GHz band (1920-1980 MHz paired with 2110-2170 MHz) in all member states, avoiding internal market fragmentation in the future use of this band.” However, an unavoidable consequence is that in the short term this will lead to less harmony in the industry. EE’s Swantee confirms personal intervention over iPhone 5
Rating: And the others had 1800 MHz spectrum too
So. To Battersea Power Station (in the UK’s capital) last night [November 1st 2012] to celebrate the official launch of EE‘s (formerly Everything Everywhere’s) 4G LTE network – 4GEE. Whilst the crowd was watching a pretty amazing 4D projection on the side of the old power station, GoMobile News found ourselves standing right next to Olaf Swantee, EE’s CEO. Not one to miss a chance, we swiftly asked Mr Swantee if he really had personally intervened in the development of the iPhone 5 to ensure it was compatible with the UK’s first 4G network which runs at 1800 MHz (Band 3). And, yes, he confirmed that he’d been to see “Tim” – as in Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. Swantee also confirmed another thing which GoMobile News had always suspected – that Vodafone and O2 have spare 1800 MHz spectrum which they could in theory use for 4G. Continue reading
EE demos Nokia Lumia 920 4G on Oxford St
Rating: Sorry, sir, we’ll have to take those tariffs away
GoMobile News took advantage of a brilliant invitation from EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) to try out its 4G LTE network in person on London’s Oxford Street. We were able to play with any of the 4G LTE devices which EE will offer. Including the Nokia Lumia 920, of course. Only problem? The smartphone hasn’t yet gone commercial so a rather worried EE official had to swiftly remove the tariff information in case we published it. We have to admit that the demonstrations of 4G in action were impressive and we now ‘get’ why people would want to make the switch to 4G. It’s for the rich, busy execs and uber-geeks who are ‘time poor’. Continue reading
Latest Apple tablets will run on EE’s 4G network in UK
Rating: Older iPad 3 only worked on North American LTE networks
Much as predicted, Apple launched a new iPad mini tablet in California yesterday [October 23rd 2012], along with an improved version of the iPad. Significantly, both models will be compatible with EE’s 4G network in the UK – 4GEE, thanks to built-in support for Band 3 LTE. EE’s own web site here doesn’t yet make reference to the two new Apple devices. However, on Apple’s own web site here, it does say, “EE (soon to launch).” This will give EE another major boost for 4G sales in the run-up to Xmas sales. Continue reading
Why 4G/LTE will kill fibre-to-the-home in the UK
Rating: We just ain’t going to dig the roads up again
In a blinding flash, the reason why fibre to the home (FTTH) hasn’t taken off in the UK came to GoMobile News. It’s all about shared communal conduits (ducts). The theory doesn’t quite fit every user case but that normally means it’s valid because there are always exceptions to the rule. Fibre to the home is, of course, the arch rival to 4G/LTE. Sneaking behind the lines (metaphorically speaking), GoMobile News attended a briefing from the FTTH Council Europe. The organisation’s communications officer, Nadia Baba, described FTTH as a futureproof technology. So why is is virtually non-existent in the UK, whilst the whole country should be covered by 4G/LTE by about 2017? The answer is easy. In the UK we don’t have ducts so we have to keep on digging up the roads. Continue reading
EE releases details of its forthcoming 4G devices
Rating: Didn’t make this clear at the time
EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) which officially launched its 4G network for the UK (running at 1800 MHz) didn’t make it clear that it was releasing full tech specs for its seven initial devices. GoMobile News suspects the list will swiftly become eight following the launch of Apple’s latest handset (codenamed iPhone 5) tomorrow [September 12th 2012]. We view this list as extremely good news for Nokia which means that both its announced Windows Phone 8 (WP8) handsets will become available from EE before Xmas 2012. In total there should be seven actual handsets and one USB 4G dongle. Continue reading
Boris J likens new EE logo to pollen count
Rating: Perils of celebrity endorsements
Mayor of London [England], Boris Johnson, had the assembled hacks at the Press launch of the Everything Everywhere rebranding launch in fits of laughter. Everything Everywhere had just boasted that its new name and logo, EE, was based on seeing the whole world as a number of connected molecules. Unfortunately, the UK largest mobile network operator with some 27 million customers had picked a loose cannon in the shape of maverick politician, Johnson, to provide a celebrity endorsement. Boris promptly repaid the favour by referring to the logo as being based on the pollen count. There’s a moral in here, somewhere. Continue reading
EE accidentally confirms that iPhone 5 is LTE
Rating: Shows obviously Apple 4G handset
As EE (the new name for Everything Everywhere) was proudly announcing that it has switched on its LTE 1800 MHz based 4G network, it accidentally showed an Apple handset as a compatible device. Other manufacturers who were named directly were Huawei, HTC, Nokia and Samsung. It’s a bit of a boost for WP8 fans that Nokia will be amongst the first 4G handset suppliers in the UK, too. Olaf Swantee revealed that his newly rebranded network has switch on its 4G service in four UK cities: – Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, and London, naturally. Which was why Major of London, Boris Johnson, was the guest speaker. Continue reading
Samsung readying for new legal action over iPhone 5
Debut of Apple’s first 4G phone likely to be blighted
Korean electronics giant Samsung is to sue arch rival Apple for violating 4G technology deployed in its latest iPhone, due to be unveiled tomorrow [12th September 2012]. Reports in the Korea Times say Apple’s flagship device, version 5 of which is likely to be the first of its handsets with super-fast, long-term evolution (LTE) connectivity, or 4G, infringes one or more of the numerous patents held by Samsung in this area. Apple v Samsung: now it’s flagship devices in the firing line
Xmas is coming, the phones are getting flak
Flagship smartphones and tablets look set to be the next target in the ongoing patents feud between Apple and Samsung. Just a week after its crushing victory in a Calfornian court, Apple last night [31st August 2012] expanded the list of devices it wants to be banned in the US to include Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note, Galaxy S III and Galaxy note 10.1 devices. In a tit-for-tat legal manoeuvre, meanwhile, it was reported that Samsung was planning to disrupt the imminent debut of the Apple iPhone with a lawsuit accusing the US manufacturer of violating its 4G patents.
