by Beth Janick, a copywriter with iphonespyapp

Microsoft recently announced its Surface tablet, due in Q4 2012, and users can’t wait for the new gadget. Apple’s iPad ruled the tablet market but many users want something different and new to the eye. Microsoft has exactly that and the success of the tablet is already gauged in the variety of views that are springing up about the tablet and the excitement amongst potential users about this gadget. The only question that remains unanswered concerns the security of this tablet. Continue reading

Apple brings in-app purchasing into disrepute – yet again

Rating: 4-year old Brit runs up £87 bill playing rogue game Smurfs’Village

Despite it’s protestations to the contrary, Apple is bringing the whole practice of in-app billing into disrepute. This is despite its protestations to the contrary. The latest incident involves a four-year-old Brit, Oliver Allen – who cannot even read or write – managed to wrack up a bill of costing £87.48. Oliver was playing a children’s game – Smurfs’ Village, and incurred the charges because his mother – Sam Allen, was still logged into the iTunes App Store. The App Store has a time-out of 15 minutes and the purchases were made within that time period. The amazing thing is that the USA’s FTC had been asked to investigate exactly the same kind of incident nine months previously. Continue reading

Good and bad news for Nokia app developers

Rating: WP7 SDK is here but developer forum has been hacked

This week has seen some very good news for developers hoping to create apps for Nokia phones. The good news is that Microsoft has just published the latest version of the Windows Phone SDK 7.1. All current publishers of Windows Phone are being asked to use this latest SDK to update their current apps and resubmit them to take advantage of new Window Phone capabilities. Which is great if you’re planning to develop for Nokia’s WP7 handsets. The bad news is that on Monday [August 22nd 2011] the developer.nokia.com forums discussion website suffered a security breach. The site contains a database of developer forum members’ email addresses and, for around 7 per cent of those members who chose to provide them – birth dates. But, Nokia account passwords, credit card data or similarly sensitive information was not accessed during this attack. So that good news as well, really. Continue reading

Sex & Tags & QR codes

Rating: Our roundup of ‘recent’ QR campaigns

When GoMo News spotted an article headed ’8 recent examples of using QR Codes for marketing and/or brand awareness’ on Socialwayne.com here, naturally, it grabbed our attention. However, on closer inspection it soon became obvious that plenty of these examples aren’t recent at all. In particular the one from the French clothing supplier, Denim Code. There are two things wrong with using Denim Code as an example: – firstly it isn’t recent, it was done back in 2007. And secondly, the 2D barcodes in question are not even QR codes, they are Metatags (See our mobile barcode 101.) So, we thought it time to give our own round-up of how 2D barcodes are being used. And to point out that the Denim Code example is always used because sex sells. Continue reading

Bulmers improves its QR code act, slightly

Rating: Needs to try harder

Following GoMo News‘ criticism of its use of QR codes for its No.17 cider advertising campaign here, we were pleasantly surprised to find another of Bulmer’s QR codes that actually worked. This one was featured in the UK’s Metro free magazine and we noted that the code was resolved by Scanbuy. So itworked this time. The only snag is that Bulmers has fallen foul of our of our Top Tips for including QR codes in your campaigns (see here). The unlearnt lesson is that that a 2D barcode should resolve to something which is mobile friendly. Unfortunately, in this case it didn’t. The code took mobile phone users straight to a full HTML site. Continue reading

Mobile barcodes, newspapers and Guinness together at last

If you’ve ever lived in a city with any public transport, you’ve probably come across the Metro. Probably the biggest free newspaper in the world, it also has a habit of being a pioneer when it comes to combining newspapers with mobile technology. In Canada today it is launching a 2D barcode initiative in conjunction with ScanBuy – allowing users to connect directly to it’s new mobile website from codes in the paper. Continue reading
