Microsoft Tag plays chess with mobile barcodes

Something is happening in the mobile barcodes water. The media interest in Microsoft Tag is evidence that interest is barcodes is moving to the mainstream and the recent success of companies from NeoMedia to Scanbuy to JagTag is showing that the US and South America are proving to be very liquid markets.

First, Amazon has announced it’s latest mobile shopping application for Android, with barcodes at its heart. And there are two stories for the Microsoft Tag system - it’s being integrated into a bridal magazine and into an ad campaign for Ford.

I read the latest press release from JAGTAG. It starts by making a bold statement – “hot off the heels of the Microsoft announcement to incorporate 2D barcodes into its XBOX video games….. Fox Home Entertainment (FHE) is going mobile with JAGTAG, Comic-Con The cult Joss Whedon hit Dollhouse and “Miss March”.

I saw a Tweet from Microsoft Tag and when I clicked the link .. (see here) http://blogs.msdn.com/tag/archive/2009/02/03/microsoft-tag-on-a-turkish-magazine.aspx
There was a picture of a magazine with a Microsoft Tag at the bottom. BUT - it was not alone. It was next to a 2D barcode.

Microsoft Tag Reader made for GoMo News after some problems finally working well

Downloading the Microsoft Tag mobile barcode readeron the N95 had been a little bit hairy for GoMo News in the first instance. Then Microsoft’s Gavin Jancke created a special reader for GoMo News called the Bena Reader made for my N95 device.

Escalate Retail has launched its Buy Anywhere, Fulfill Anywhere service on mobile devices. The service places Microsoft Tag for retail products on magazines or billboards. Users can scan a tag, buy the product on their mobile, and go to the nearest store to pick it up.
