Mobile operators joining forces to fight Apple App store? It’ll never happen, says Mobango

meerkatsYesterday saw a remarkable announcement from 24 different mobile operators. The group, which contains some of the largest mobile operators in the world, claimed it would launch an open platform to deliver applications to all mobile phone owners. But according to Fabio Pezzotti, Founder of mobile app store Mobango, that is never going to happen.

1. New app allows full access to the Vodafone People service, including wireless syncing of contacts and aggregation of social network feeds, chat and email accounts

2. Nearly 300,000 Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 and M1 phones sold since service launch

3. Downloadable 360 services now available for 100 devices

4. Hyves social networking site now integrated

It maintains its own mobile content portal in nine countries, with a focus on ringtones and wallpapers - the question is how will this kind of content compete with applications?

picture-41 Nokia dropped a bombshell on the navigation world two weeks ago, when it announced a completely free mobile GPS navigation service. The application is almost as good as a free-standing GPS navigation device and it’s a free download to anyone with a Nokia device that has GPS… of which there are 28 different models. So it should come as no surprise that it has been a popular download. And Nokia has announced that it has already seen 1.4 million downloads of the app.

M-Days provides a platform for mobile start-ups and applications

It provided a platform for 7 (out of 23) selected companies to present their apps and/or business models in a 5 minute “elevator pitch” presentation. The winner was determined by applause!

Bei der MobileMonday DemoNight@M-days, einer gemeinsamen Veranstaltung der M-Days und von MobileMonday München am Donnerstag, den 28.1., hatten die Vertreter von 7 vom Veranstalter (aus 23 eingereichten Bewerbungen) vorausgewählten Unternehmen Gelegenheit, ihre Applikationen bzw. Geschäftsmodelle in 6-Minuten Live-Präsentationen auf der Messe-Bühne vorzustellen. Der Sieger wurde dabei vom Publikum durch die Intensität des Applaus gekürt.

20,000 apps means less on Android than it does on iPhone

androidIt’s being widely reported today that the Android Market now has at least 20,000 applications for sale - and while this is rightly heralded as a great sign for the platform, it also suffers from problems that iPhone apps don’t.

tapjoyWe got some news in today from Tapjoy, which provides free ad optimisation for iPhone apps. The company has released a new version of it’s open SDK, and is now offering a full app analytics service from Pinch Media. Both companies will be offering their app tools from a unified dashboard for developers.

mig33It seems that announcing when you’ve hit 10 million on GetJar is “the thing” to do. Well ok, I would too. It’s pretty impressive. The latest to announce this accomplishment is mobile IM and chat client mig33. A large part of this success can be attributed to Pay Per Download - a GetJar program that allows developers to bid for better placement on the GetJar site.
